Scooters with drive train swingarm and automatic transmission are basically old hat, in combination with aluminum frames and radial brakes like the new one D.erbi GP1 is not only new, but also very attractive. In the fifties already on the market for a year, Derbi is now pushing the versions for the older children. Since the brand has belonged to the Italian scooter giant Piaggio, its tried and tested, modern water-cooled oven-valve engine have been used. The 125 has A1-compliant 15 hp driving license, the 250 has 22. While the small machine runs smoothly, the big Pott is quite rough, but ensures much more confident progress. Except for the drive, the two scooters are identical.
The suspension set-up is on the taut side in line with the sporty habitus. Regardless of this, the upside-down fork responds properly and filters away most of the bumps. The idiosyncratic centrally mounted rear suspension strut is less comfortable and gives particularly short, dry bumps unchecked to the equally tight ones-
upholstered and lofty bench seat.
Driving stability and steering precision are beyond any doubt, ditto the two disc brakes. Radial at the front, conventionally screwed at the rear and provided with steel flex lines, they offer a clean pressure point with low operating strengths and a brutal effect. As is typical for athletes, the equipment is limited to the essentials, the helmet compartment offers just a little space for a full-face helmet, and the running boards are narrow. With your knees you can support or bump against the leg shield, depending on your taste. sgl
