Driving report Ducati Hypermotard (2007)
Hyper, hyper
There have been few new products in recent times that have caused so much buzz and so much hype as the Ducati Hypermotard. Now it is there. Does she keep in practice what her exciting appearance promises?
Why we built this motorcycle? We wanted to put the Multistrada back on its wheels in an exciting way. «Ducati Press Officer Francesco Rapisarda gets straight to the point. After the super and mega photos of the competition now the Hypermotard from Ducati. The name sounds even more extreme? and so is the Hypermotard, at least outwardly. That D.ucati the study, which two years ago turned the heads of experts and the public for the first time and saved it almost unchanged in the series, deserves extra applause.
Extremely minimalist, extremely awesome ?? the Hypermotard is bathed in bright red in the sun. This design, it hits right in the heart. No frills, no unnecessary frills, just the bare essentials. Even the avant-garde folding mirrors of the study, which allow good consideration, went into series production. It’s great that Ducati has chosen the air-cooled two-valve engine for this sharp supermoto interpretation. You’d better not imagine a fat water cooler and a tangle of cooling hoses in this sinewy fun bike.
The 1100 twin comes from the Multistrada, on whose chassis the Hypermotard frame is based. The two are not only visually different, they also weigh around 17 kilograms compared to the standard version of the Hypermotard, which is available for the first part of the day, a tour of the country roads of Sardinia. The Hypermotard S, which will be the first to arrive at dealerships from the end of May, carries another two kilograms less with it.
It continues to extreme when ascending. Less because of the seat height? 845 millimeters, says Ducati. So by no means invincible. No, as slim and crisp as it already stands, the Hypermotard seems to shrink even further when viewed from the saddle. Single-cylinder supermotos are hardly more expansive. The 12.4 liter plastic tank, which reaches under the driver’s seat, results in an outrageously narrow waist. The slight depression in the firm seat puts the driver in close contact with the handlebars, which tastes like an attack. So let them come, the winding streets.
First gear, open the gas and ?? snap, the Hypermotard is on the rear wheel. Quickly after the second one, a hearty gas kick and a short pull on the handlebars, and the red one makes man again. The Twin, equipped with the transmission of the 1098, already shovels a lot of torque to the rear wheel in the lower speed range, as you need on the country road. In the lower half of the engine speed it cannot resist a strong load change jolt when applying the throttle, but it is otherwise cultivated. The two-cylinder lets its 86 hp off the leash in an easily controllable manner. The performance specification corresponds exactly to the values โโof the Multistrada despite the smaller airbox. Acoustically, the Twin is absolutely convincing with its extremely full soundscape.
The fully adjustable suspension elements not only offer ample suspension travel (165/141 millimeters front / rear), but also sufficiently firm damping without appearing uncomfortable. On the contrary: the Marzocchi fork in particular, with its lush 50 mm sliding tubes, is very sensitive to the asphalt.
So the relaxed rider has everything under control, because the Hypermotard zaps easily through the curves. But not with weightless ease. A tighter grip on the wide handlebars is particularly helpful when you have to go through sweeping and harassment. Because the Signora, soled with Bridgestone BT 14 in special identification, does not draw her arches completely neutrally. This may also be due to the fact that the rebound stage of the fork acted quite tightly despite the damper valves being wide open, while that of the shock absorber was on the soft side even when the adjustment range was fully used. A small improvement brings it to slide a little further back on the bench.
There is absolutely nothing to complain about against the effect of the brake cocktail. While the study adorned itself with a large single disk in the front wheel, the series models now have two radially screwed Brembo pliers biting into 305 millimeter steel disks. And they do this with such efficiency that the monobloc calipers with larger brake pistons (34 instead of 32 millimeters) from the 1098, which sit on the forged fork feet in the more elegant “S” version, almost seem like pure luxury.
Admittedly, it is not available for free, an extra 2,000 euros for the “S” is just a word. But in addition to said brake calipers and a few carbon fiber cuts, you also get forged wheels soled with sticky Pirelli Diablo Corsa III, which are supposed to save around two kilograms. In addition, carbon-coated fork sliding tubes, Ohlins shock absorber and a push rod with height adjustment on the rocker arm of the shock absorber.
And already the first laps on the small race track in Mores show that the extra charge is well invested. The »S« swivels noticeably more readily into an inclined position, appears much more confident, neutral and better balanced in fast and slow arcs and can be driven out of the corners in a refreshingly inclined position with powerful bangs.
In addition, the S versions were equipped with an open Termignoni exhaust system and a suitable control unit from the Ducati Performance program. And with that the 1100er ran even smoother, took on the gas cuddly and pushed from 3000 / min up to the limiter at 8500 / min loudly roaring and briskly.
Unfortunately, the joy of the elevated chassis qualities of the »S« only lasted for a short time. Two times ten minutes driving time, that’s it. But there was enough time to heat up the anticipation of the comparison with the orange and white-blue competition.
Conclusion
After the first impressions, the Hypermotard S in particular is a fine, active, fun vehicle that shows that even just under 90 hp are always sufficient for high-class pleasure. The Ducati is far less extreme than it looks, which makes it all the more interesting for everyday use. The outrageously attractive look doesn’t need any further words anyway.
