Favor of omission
The big monster returns to its roots. Without water cooling, without four-valve head ?? and precisely because of that with a long-missing charm.
A look back. 1993. The Ducati engineers hang their air-cooled V2 with the largest capacity, the 900 engine from the SS, in the tubular frame of the 888, arranging the combination in the simple naked bike style ?? and land with her "900 monsters" a world success. Sports freaks, lifestylers or traditionalists, this concept succeeded in uniting all Ducatisti.
Timeskip. Autumn 2008. Again the largest volume air-cooled two-cylinder from Bologna, the 1079 two-valve from the fun bike Hypermotard, is clamped between the bright red cane. The fan community feels: The big monster is redefining itself. Because it reflects on its roots. Water coolers, hosiery, unadorned smooth-surfaced cylinders, since 2001 an unattractive necessity for the largest monster model to date, the water-cooled S4, have disappeared. Give way to the classic look of the ribbed L engine with its distinctive cylinder heads. Admittedly, fat people need not trample the path of success alone. Her little sister is already doing this job. The new frame concept, a combination of the characteristic tubular space frame and a frame rear made of cast aluminum screwed to it, the eccentrically positioned suspension strut directly linked without deflection, the 15 liter tank pulled down under the seat or the two funnel-shaped silencers ?? the 696 ushered in the new monster age in the middle of this year.
But as it is with sisters, on the most expensive potty at the top of the make-up shelf, only the bigger one is enough. And so they belong to her all alone, the massive single-sided swing arm, the completely adjustable upside-down fork or the radially hinged fittings for the brake and clutch. And of course those 383 additional cubic centimeters of displacement, with which the new one confidently takes the floor. Reluctance? She wouldn’t be an Italian or a Ducati if she were to be shut up. Not even from that exhaust flap in front of the two silencers. The arm of the law has only put a closed housing cover over the lustful rattling of the lamellas of your dry clutch. After all, there is the openwork? quasi as acoustic lingerie? in the Ducati accessories range.
Clutch pulled, first gear, downhill
It is hardly noticeable that the 1100 monster has grown four centimeters in height compared to the 696 due to the longer fork tubes and a longer shock absorber. A seat height of 81 centimeters is still okay for ordinary Central Europeans. Especially since on board subito this new feeling sets in on the Monster. More upright, much less strained over the tank and overall further forward you sit more sporty, more active and yet more comfortable. Only the handlebars, with their uncomfortably sloping crank, are reminiscent of the old monster times, which were bad in this respect.
But the 1100 impresses with its engine from the very first few meters. Yes that’s it. This is exactly what the monsters needed! The short-stroke shakes itself just a little under 2000 revolutions, and then shortly afterwards it exudes the magic of sheer volume. The 90-degree V2 pushes powerful, sovereign and superior. No trace of speed-hungry excitement, but full of pressure. Whether 70, 80 or the promised 90 hp will later press on the role of any dynamometer, disappears in these moments in the insignificance. What matters is that powerful punch. The fact that it hardly vibrates, the gas takes on as smooth as butter, the transmission shifts as light as a feather, all of this is drowned out in the enthusiasm for this dominant engine. Even the fact that the play in the drive train when the load changes in the middle of the curve often draws a spike in the targeted line with a hard jerk.
Anyway, after all, the rest of the 1100s stay close to the ball. The handling is front-wheel-oriented, and differs only marginally from the 696 with 160-size tires despite the 180-size rear tire . In contrast to the old Monster, the brakes can be adjusted excellently, the strut and fork tend to be sporty, but still sufficiently comfortable. The critical lean angle? with the 696 another aspect ?? disappears from the list of topics after the suspension is raised. In contrast to financing. Because the Italians demand a hefty premium for the big pots. Compared to the 696, which costs almost 8,000 euros, the 1100s have a good 3000 euros more over the counter. For the S version with Ohlins spring elements and carbon covers, an additional 2000 euros have to be made loose. Still hard to resist the new Big Monster.
