"Iom 78: On the Isle of Man (IOM), Mike Hailwood wrote another chapter in Ducati history in 1978: he came, saw and won in legendary fashion on his 900 SS; the replica that followed in 1979 with its red / white / green design is skillfully quoted in this kit." (Ducati)

"Imola 72: Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari’s double victory at the Imola 200 in 1972 is a milestone in Ducati racing history. "The Imola 72" reminds of this with its silver finish and the fiberglass strip in the tank, which imitates the simple fuel level indicators of those days." (Ducati)

"Sport 100: The silver-blue kit with the famous Ducati Meccanica logo is a direct tribute to Fabio Taglioni’s Sport 100, which Ducati even won the Motogiro d´Italia in the racing-crazy 50s." (Ducati)

"Pantah: Ducati marched into the 80s on the Pantah 500 SL – with a typical style and logo. The Pantah kit is a worthy monument to the first Ducati with a tubular space frame and timing belt driven camshafts in gray with red and blue accents." (Ducati)

"Ducati Corse: In 2009 the Ducati Corse logo was presented at the presentation of two 1198 special models, in 2010 the teams of the MotoGP and Superbike World Championships competed under the new logo. With this kit, it is now also being used to design a motorcycle for the first time." (Ducati)

"Darmah: What would the 70s and 80s have been without black and gold motorcycles? This kit is reminiscent of the Darmah, a thoroughbred naked bike, with which Ducati upheld this classic color scheme, inextricably linked with the special logo of those days." (Ducati)

"Mach 1: Here, too, the Ducati Meccanica logo in the captivating red and white context of the 1960s, when the Ducati single-cylinder continued their triumphant advance. "Ducati 250 Mach 1" was the name of the motorcycle with which this development began." (Ducati)

The new Ducati Monster 796

Around 3000 kilometers as the crow flies from Iceland, Ducati presented the last missing component in the Monster family, the new 796. But the one that was really missing alongside the 1100 and 696?

Driving report: Ducati Monster

VIn front of a charming brick building that serves as a museum, Ducati employees have lined up their latest creation, the Monster 796. Which, quite simply, consists of a drilled out 696 engine and the chassis of the Monster 1100. The Ducati employees, all sun-eyed, in factory outfits and with short hair, are standing in the corner as casually as if their hands had been sewn into their pockets. And come across as cool as the new Monster 796, which you can sit on moments later. Test drive not only allowed, but encouraged.

The new Ducati Monster 796

Delicacies: elaborate single-sided swing arm made of aluminum, stainless steel exhaust system, aluminum rims with Y-spokes – the eye likes to ride along here.

Tuscany lures with a network of streets that leaves nothing to be desired. Hairpin turns and wide arcs, often connected by short straights, on which the heart of the machine can beat faster. And have to. The Desmodue engine is in its element here. The air / oil-cooled V2 is mechanically identical to the 796 counterpart, which also has the Ducati Hypermotard 796 drives. In the Monster, with 87, it even delivers nine hp more. The air filter box and exhaust system are larger, and the mapping is tailored to the greater throughput. Even after the first furious pass chase, the question asked at the beginning is answered: The 796 Monster is a wonderful piece of the puzzle through its power development alone, which closes the gap between a possible performance deficit of the 696 and an excess of the 1100.

The drive runs smoothly and delivers only the kind of life-affirming good vibrations one would expect from a sporty Vau. He tells you euphorically that he has at least as much pleasure in rushing through the rev range as the driver himself. But the 796 can also be driven lazily. From as little as 3000 rpm it goes smoothly. The smoothly completed country road swing is done between 4000 and 6000 tours. Sports enthusiasts are also welcome to squeeze the Vau up to around 9000 revolutions. This V2 satisfies everyone, from the strolling in-the-area-viewer to the adrenaline-pushed fast-around-the-corner bender. Nobody needs power on the country road. Mainly because the existing performance in connection with a modest 169 kilograms dry weight (factory specification, with ABS) comes across wonderfully dynamic.

But the 796 not only closes a gap on the engine side. At 9,495 euros, the Goldene-Mitte-Monster, which is only available in Germany as an ABS version, is 1505 euros cheaper than its big 1100 sister, but has at least as many technical goodies as single-sided swingarms and light aluminum wheels with Y-spokes. And it is only 805 euros more expensive than the technically less appetizing 696. Are there actually still reasons that speak for the little one?

Super lean angle stability thanks to the tightly tuned chassis.

The sporty, crisp suspension elements inform the driver of any type of road change. The feedback is good. However, comfort leaves a lot to be desired. That’s how it is with the sporty naked bikes. But let’s be honest: If you fall in love with a skinny model because of his delicate curves, you don’t miss a double D, right? The 796 is undoubtedly a bike with character that vigorously defends itself against the demands of a means of transport. For this reason, you don’t blame her for the fact that she steers a little stubbornly, hardly brakes at the rear, lets you shift gears with hooks and, due to the shape of the tank, gives the driver a hit below the belt one or the other time when driving over potholes or waves.

Nevertheless, the 796 shines with an ABS that made a very passable impression on the first test kilometers. Although late and heavy brakes will complain about the somewhat dull acting brake, the majority of drivers should be satisfied with this three to four-finger operation.

Last but not least, a message that should give the competition food for thought: In addition to the three basic colors, Monster models can now also be used for moderate prices ten different color kits from the factory (Photo show: see below) can be put together individually or spruced up afterwards. The kit consists of the two tank covers, fenders and the passenger seat cover. Ash gray is not included, by the way. Thank God.
