Driving report Gilera Nexus 250/500
On a nexus
In 2003, the Italian scooter wholesaler Piaggio was approaching the sporty Rol market-
ler to stir up and as a result the Gilera Nexus 500 into the race. The concept of the single-cylinder sports maxi scooter with a very idiosyncratic seating position and, measured by the dimensions, limited space, led despite gags like
the adjustable chassis geometry not exactly to storm the customers on the dealerships.
To change this, Piaggio has redesigned the Nexus. On apparently-
ten are the indicators that are now on the Ka-
rose series instead of the handlebars. There wind deflectors now protect the hands from excessive drafts. The changes are barely visible, but clearly noticeable-
ergonomics. The seat height down 25 millimeters, the handlebars up by almost the same amount and a little forward, and it fits. However, this does not make the foot space any more spacious; and also in terms of trunk is lusciously different. In the cockpit, the speedometer and tachometer have swapped places for better readability. The significantly shorter windshield reduces wind noise and rounds off the changes to the periphery.
Much more has happened with regard to plastic. The only moto so far-
rization with the 38 hp, 460 cubic centimeter four-valve stew, a lively and ultra-modern quarter-liter drive unit was added. If you are satisfied with the small version, you save a whopping 2589 euros, but you have to go for it
Forego a few things: 16 hp and 19 Newton meters, for example, which clearly robs the heavy Nexus of its sovereignty.
The missing second brake disc
at the front, however, you can get over it. Set-up freaks miss that on the 250
Height-adjustable rear of the half-liter model via a length-adjustable push rod. As a result, the steering head angle can be changed up to one degree, the effect on the driving characteristics can hardly be ignored even by less sensitive people. In handling level one with the rear fully raised, the large Nexus moves just as calmly and stoically.
The driven 250 model, however, exhibited a wobble with a doughy turn-in at the same time. Unfortunately, the short drive time did not allow for research into the cause. Just by difference-
liche wheel sizes and tires ?? Pirelli in the 500, Michelin in the 250 ?? is hardly explain this discrepancy. The chassis set-up, on the other hand, is tough but warm on both of them. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether the measures have been sufficient to significantly increase the number of those willing to buy a Nexus. sgl
