Harley FXRSS-1458

In the solid aluminum chassis, an inflated Harley twin says goodbye to the myth of lazy serenity.

E.First of all: We do not want to ask the question of sense and nonsense on the next six pages. No sober-thinking person would come up with the idea of making a sports motorcycle out of antiquated Harley technology. The overweight construction lacks any talent for this. And yet the desire for sportiness seems to be spreading in the Milwaukee camp as well. Holger Dunke, Harley dealer in Bruchsal, Baden and so far been busy building choppers of all styles, discovered the new way of drive and put the quirky idea of the Harley racer into action. So away with the steel pipe structure and here with the polished aluminum loops. Fine welding beads and cleverly designed stiffeners testify to the skilled craft of the English NWS / RMD frame forge. Originally designed for the drag strip, the steering geometry also promises acceptable properties for curvy terrain. A 64 degree steep Suzuki upside-down fork with a 17-inch wheel and sporty 120/70 Pirelli Dragon rubber adorn the front, while the aft of the Pirelli in the obligatory 180 format provides traction and – most importantly – shows effect . The wheelbase of an impressive 1585 millimeters was still rigorously based on rollover-safe dragster dimensions. What the sportsman needs in terms of handling, gives the astonished viewer a really imposing, elongated monster, which with its unconventional mixture of street fighter, racer and chopper does not fit into any drawer. Every child knows that length runs. And so with the FXRSS 1458 it does not matter that the frame loops have to do without the supporting function of the motor. Despite the elastic engine mounting in rubber elements, the frame stiffness is sufficient to keep the 95 hp prototype stable in all cases. So that the elastically suspended gear unit with integrated swing arm bearings does not spoil the directional stability, the gear block is supported by a third, additional joint bearing on the frame. Effortlessly and accurately when turning and changing lean angles, the 241 kilogram monster demands tight reins in long curves. You can’t get rid of the feeling as if the elongated rear triangle wants to go straight ahead. Which is not to say that the FXRSS 1458 has no love for curves. If it has to, it bends at an angle up to the clutch cover. If that’s not enough, you have to compensate for the restricted ground clearance with acrobatic gymnastics. No sports? No way, this thing wants to be conquered. Or you just let it rumble around loosely. No sports! Last gear, low speed – and the Harley world is back in balance. The start of the V2 engine alone ensures this. 135 Newton meters of torque are available to rumble through the landscape, gas on, gas on. Well-tuned, the Mikuni carburetor with accelerator pump reacts to every command without hesitation. After all, there are 95 hp on paper; and they push forward quickly. The Harley pushes itself through the wind up to a proud 207 km / h. With the rider stretched wide on the broad handlebars, such experiments force lying flat to play hide-and-seek behind the steeply inclined Streetfighter nose. How, please, can you explain such an explosion in performance? Of course, the displacement, which has been increased to 1,458 cubic centimeters for the “Touring version” via a stroke of 119.5 millimeters (108 series) and 89 Mahle forged pistons (88 millimeters series). There is nothing to be done with series parts. The housing and crank mechanism come from the Harley specialist S.&S and enable a displacement of up to an incredible 1880 cubic centimeters. Instead of the 40 Keihin constant pressure carburetor, the engine is now sniffing its elixir of life through the 42 Mikuni HSR component. A smooth-running flat slide with roller bearings lowers the hand force on the throttle and reduces turbulence in the intake tract. Flow-optimized ducts and valve seats are connected and make it easier for the mixture to access the 9.8 to 1 compressed cylinder head. It is ignited by an electronic Crane Hi-4 ignition system, which leaves room for the play instinct through various ignition curves. Modified cam profiles with 12.7 millimeter valve lift (series ???) also make the V2 steam upside down without losing the power from the lower rev range. To ensure that the punch hits the road, a centrifugal mechanism supports the clutch springs and increases the contact pressure of the friction linings with increasing speed. Dragster specialists know all about it, this trick also saves the top fuel bikes on the drag strip from smoky clutches. The result of the engine cure: the sprint to 100 km / h is done in 4.5 seconds, up to 160 km / h takes 13.7 seconds, and the long-stroke engine masters the torque in the last gear from 60 to 140 km / h in just 9.3 seconds. So that the load comes to a stop again, you pull out all the stops: 16 brake pistons, distributed over two Spiegler brake calipers, effortlessly convert the speed into heat. Impressive technology, no question about it, but simply oversized for the Harley FXRSS 1458. Technology freak and mechanical engineer Holger Dunke, on the other hand, thinks it’s simply awesome. However, he is still struggling with a few other details of his prototype, which he built in a few weeks. For example, the cheap Metisse cladding shell made of clunky plastic with the cloudy double funnel, the useless rear-view mirror or the makeshift aluminum wheel cover are at the top of the list of defects. Until the prototype rolls along, ready for sale, H.D. American Motorcycles drove a few more night shifts. There is no question that Harley customers can be enthusiastic about the sporty version. Only the price of around 15,500 marks for the frame kit and 14,000 marks for the “small” 1458 engine could make the sports-loving Harley clientele think.

Harley-Davidson FXRSS 1458 (FB) (archive version) – Variants on the subject of sports

More and more Harley freaks are trying in a seemingly hopeless endeavor to trim their V2 for sport. The most unusual motorcycles often arise from the contradiction between antiquated technology and classy sportiness. The change from a chrome heavyweight to a sleek speedster suits the Harley strategists at just the right time. It was not for nothing that the Harley Cup was installed, in which there is a tough fight for victory and honor on the strictly regulated 883 Sportster. No sports? In a society that is characterized by fitness and activity, Harley-Davidson can not only rely on the image of indolent comfort.
