E.in a hearty enduro excursion into the terrain? The brand new Honda CRE 490X from HM, which Honda dealer Waldmann (phone 08342/899704, www.honda-waldmann.de) imports, comes in at just the right time. 123 kilograms dry, the 450 engine with four millimeters more bore inflated to 490 cubic meters, an e-starter that is vital in the field and last but not least: no more carburettors. The 490 is fired by an injection, choke goodbye. In order for the whole thing to work, a gasoline pump was needed. This was mounted in a specially made 7.5 liter aluminum tank to save space. The test bench of the 490 attests to real 50 hp and a fantastic torque curve. Delicious!
So, the darling from the trailer. The generous steering angle is already noticeable when unloading, a great help in difficult terrain. Seat rehearsal, this is a Honda. Good ergonomics, smooth clutch, only the tank and cooler are a little wider than the CRF cross model, which serves as the basis. Now there are no more excuses to convince the electric starter, whereby the clutch has to be pulled, otherwise the Honda will not make a sound.
Even on the way to the gravel pit, the Honda feels familiar and its handiness is incredible. However, the engine runs rough at low speeds, but it is not yet warm. Therefore, first gently, various berms and waves later, the pace is then forced, and the stiff chassis copes perfectly with the brisk pace.
Now let’s go to the tricky sections. It goes almost vertically up a slope. This is followed by narrow, narrow paths, it follows one ascent to hell after the other, and it goes down again at least as steeply. The brakes work perfectly, but the CRE’s sovereignty is disappearing here. The stiff chassis is a bit too much in difficult terrain and quickly makes your arms tired. The rough engine run and the hard throttle response are not exactly trustworthy. To make matters worse, the Honda dies all of a sudden, especially in low engine speed regions, as soon as you quickly open the gas tap. Fatal if you just want to lift the front wheel over an obstacle.
The difficult passages clearly show the limits of the CRE. In the final laps on level ground, however, the Honda presented itself again from its best side. For drivers of the GCC or IGE, it should still be an attractive motorcycle, as these races mostly take place on motocross tracks. And as long as the Honda is allowed to plow over the terrain with momentum, it is a really great motorcycle. mr
