Driving report Honda CB 1300 and CB 600 F Hornet

UP-DATE

After MOTORRAD already raced around Mount Fujijama with the Japanese version of the naked newcomer CB 1300, the European version together with the 2003 Hornet 600 in Sicily can now show what it can do.

Fleet undisguised are currently very trendy and successfully resist any downward trend. The Honda CB 1300 is a prime example of this genre. Domesticated in its home country by flap in the exhaust system due to the strict noise regulations there, the big block in Europe now exhales more uninhibited, as befits its standing. Audibly more uninhibited, because the four-in-two-in-one system happily escapes bass-heavy tubes, the start of the 116 hp four-cylinder is accompanied by finely proportioned vibrations. In its foundations, the engine comes from the Honda X4, which is officially only available in Japan, the cylinders and heads are new, the injection is a combination of the tried and tested, such as the throttle valve housing of the Hornet 900 plus fine atomizing twelve-hole nozzles.
From idle, it goes with momentum up to the highest positions, but for fun swinging it is enough to engage fifth gear in the finely shifted gearbox and let the load run. The five hundred pound bolide exudes a cozy “welcome-home” feeling. Not to be confused with boredom. The 1300 steers precisely and masters corners quickly without appearing stoic or wobbly. The four-piston pliers at the front decelerate linearly with hair-fine dosing. Sure, there are more suitable bikes for wrapping hairpins around hairpins, but the newton meters of the 1284 cm3 cathedral that are on duty make up ground at the end of the curve at the latest. You only need a little feeling when you pull the throttle tightly because of the play in the drive train. In return, the 43 mm fork and the two shock absorbers, each adjustable in terms of the spring base and rebound damping, act tightly, but nonetheless sensitive and with honest feedback. They only give the pilot a dry kick in the back when driving over bad bumps quickly. What is quickly forgotten in view of the active, comfortable seating position behind the tubular handlebar, whose mounts allow 20 millimeters fore / aft adjustment. The LC display is just as variable between the classic round instruments with various information levels from trip meters and ambient temperature to the stopwatch.
The Hornet 600, the best-selling motorcycle in Europe, is characterized by fewer gimmicks, but outrageously playful handiness and an affordable price. Outwardly brought a little on edge and equipped with a new type of round headlight with two-tier interior for low and high beam, the evolution of the 7190 euro successful model took place in secret. For example in the exhaust system with unregulated catalytic converters. Together with the secondary air system, they lift the engine derived from the 1998 CBR 600 F over the Euro 2 hurdle.
VThis change is just as not noticeable while driving as the revised intake and exhaust ports and the modified profiles of the camshafts. As usual, the Hornet whizzes at first cautiously and then screaming wildly towards its performance zenith at 12,000 rpm, where 97 hp are found. More important than pure top performance is the carefree interaction of the components, which brings the Hornet to the front, especially on tricky terrain, such as in the city or on winding country roads. The pilot can slide 15 millimeters further forward on the newly designed tank-seat combo when the progressively tuned spring elements are used in a cheeky manner on the slopes. And even if the 200 kilogram hornet seems a bit nervous on undulating parquet, no radius is too narrow, no combination of curves too adventurous. This applies to both beginners and advanced users, because both benefit from the refreshing nature of the compact fun device. And so that it stays that way, the small as well as the large CB are protected from unfair interested parties by means of an immobilizer. In the spirit of a sustained sales boom in the naked segment.
