Driving report: Honda Crosser
Honda CRF 450 R.
Injection, Kayaba spring elements, new peripherals ?? Honda blows the cross attack.
The CRF 450 R, Honda’s series crosser for the MX1 class, has so far stood for a clear commitment: to top-class sport. Tightly coordinated spring elements from Showa and the aggressively designed performance characteristics of the 450 single made the CRF a weapon for top pilots, but usually overwhelmed many hobby crossers in terms of driving and fitness.
In the model year 2009 everything should now be different. Kayaba now supplies the fork and shock absorber. In the past few years Showa’s toughest competitor has built a reputation for making its off-road suspension elements more responsive.
As expected, Honda is following the pioneering Suzuki engine and replacing the carburetor with battery-free petrol injection including a tank volume reduced from 7.2 to 5.7 liters. And because hardly anything was left untouched on the periphery of the CRF, the red will roll behind the gate next season as a completely new development.

Better draft: long manifold for more power from the lower engine speed.
It is a shame that the borderline ground conditions only allowed the first impressions to be made when the new Honda was presented. But so much in advance: The suspension is more comfortable both at the front and rear, and the handling remains precise, as is typical of CRF. The engine kicks in more moderately in the lower speed range, and on top of that it has greater revving power. By the way: The curiously expected option to choose between different mappings is reduced in practice to a five-stage change in the mixture composition, which will not have a decisive influence on the performance characteristics. So be it.
Hopefully the positive forecast for the new Honda CRF 450 R also applies to gasoline consumption. With the reduced tank volume could ?? after an injection at least in the Suzuki did not result in a measurable lower consumption ?? Many a dream of victory just burst before the finish line.
