Counter evolution
Honda reacts to the competition as usual: With evolution instead of revolution. At first glance, you can hardly see any differences between the 2007 Crossers and this year’s machines. This also applies to the two-stroke engines from a technical point of view, because they are practically unchanged. With the four-stroke engines, however, Honda did a lot in secret to give the two Unicam engines a little more power.
In the case of the CRF 250 R, the engineers changed the cam profiles, reshaped the intake ports, reworked the exhaust manifolds and reprogrammed the ignition. The motor now rotates 170 revolutions higher. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is clearly noticeable in practice, as MOTORRAD tester Didi Lacher found out during the presentation of the new machines on the slopes of the MSC Berkheim in the Allgau. The usable speed range is wider, you can leave the gear in front of a curve and turn the engine to the limiter without loss of thrust.
Both four-stroke engines also received the usual chassis modification in the form of a modified fine-tuning of the suspension elements. The small four-stroke engine is designed to be rather soft. The front and rear suspension responds sensitively, but offers enough progression so that it does not hit through rough waves or rough landings. The front brake works a bit more efficiently thanks to the modified lever kinematics in the pump, even if it does not yet reach the KTM stopper.
With the already very strong one C.RF 450 R, the technicians also dealt extensively with the development of performance. Smaller exhaust valves, a larger carburetor and a differently programmed ignition should optimize the response behavior and the torque curve. The test machine initially ran a bit fat and accordingly tough with the series spraying. Smaller nozzles made the characteristics more aggressive and the throttle response more direct. Pressure is in abundance in every situation, but the power can still be controlled to some extent because the engine is very soft on the gas and hardly vibrates.
The suspension of the 450 series is much tighter, especially in terms of damping. Decisive for the consistently excellent impression of the previous class leader is the balanced balance and agile handling. gt / dl
