Driving report Kawasaki Z 750 (2007)

Cherry’s dream

MOTORRAD test editor Rolf Henniges drove the brand new Z 750 in Spain. And in the process he discovered the ideal motorcycle for his best friend Christian, known as Kirsche.

Hello cherry, you’ve been dreaming of a motorcycle that fits you perfectly for so long and have kept asking me what to buy. Now have ?? I rode a bike that could fulfill your dreams: the new Z 750 ?? a tame spirit in a rebellious outfit. Sporty, consistent, but at the same time comfortable. Full of strength and yet not too brutal. It also looks good. Much better than its predecessor.
Because Kawasaki has given the Z 750 not only a technical, but also a visual update. A size 41 upside-down fork with adjustable rebound and spring preload now guides the front wheel. So far, a conventional fork has done its job more or less committed. The newly designed cockpit is not only easier to read and more informative ?? it is even more pleasing. Perched like a king on the small lamp panel. Both the cockpit and the lamp cladding look much higher quality than the previous version. On top of that, the oval exhaust, formerly a plain stainless steel stovepipe, in the combination of stainless steel / matt black with its two asymmetrical outlets comes across much more crisp.
The seating position is also crisp. By changing the steering head you sit slightly more upright compared to the old one. In addition, the machine has become narrower in the leg area. My 1.68 meters intertwine with the waist of the Z as intimately as your 1.91 meters? by the way: Are you now down to the targeted 87 kilograms, or is Ute still calling you “my little lifebuoy”? While we’re at it: The 750 has also grown? it should be around twelve kilograms more. This means that the 750 weighs around 230 kilograms. Part of the fat build-up is at the expense of the ABS ?? yes, don’t laugh: even rebels sometimes need life insurance.
Enough of theory. Does Rudi still have his KTM Duke and Wolli the Honda X-Eleven? With the Z 750 you would combine the advantages of both machines: handiness, aggressive optics, powerful four-cylinder power. You will get rid of them with the 750, that’s for sure. Because in contrast to various other models, which suffered badly this year due to the vote according to the Euro 3 emissions standard, the Z 750 manages the exhaust gas hurdle with almost no losses.
Almost four hp means less peak power. The new presses 106 hp at 10500 rpm compared to its 110 at 11000 tours. Ridiculous. You can only feel the difference, if at all, in the last fifth of the speed. In any case, more important than the number poker is how the newcomer behaves in real life.
And then it is time to press a button, enter the gear and have a tasty meal. You can easily drive through Billingshausen in sixth gear. Then the engine turns a casual 3000 rpm. And still don’t choke when you pull up on the straight. The coordination is perfect: new, oval double throttle valves, finer atomizing nozzles, modified intake tract and modified camshafts, together with a revised mapping and more centrifugal mass, guarantee a constant smile on your face.
The 748 cm3 strong unit reacts without contradiction to gas commands in every situation. And does it gently. From 3500 rpm the ghosts are wide awake, appear restless, push forward. From 6500 rpm they are completely out of control. Now the fuse has reached its destination. What comes next is best described as a controlled outburst of anger. And so that it can also be perfectly matched to obstacles such as cars or hairpin bends, Kawa has revised the transmission. The gears slide much more precisely and easily. A modified motor mount also minimizes vibrations. Only from 7000 rpm does the handlebars tingle a little. That hardly bothers you, as it is part of it like sweating is part of sport.
Speaking of sports. How about the weekend chase through the pastors curves? With the Z you would definitely be king in the ring in the bends.
There are several reasons for this: If you are approaching from Holzerode, you can use the new brakes to anchor on the last centimeter. The ABS brake from Nissin shines with a transparent pressure point, the two double-piston floating calipers with a good one
Delay. The ABS regulates late, but not as sensitive as that of the competition from Bavaria. Curve entrance, on the right the tree where the pastor had parked, on the left the willow. Turn in. At least now, Wolli will snap out of the rear-view mirrors with his X-Eleven. The Z 750 bends precisely on the mounted Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier and remains stable even over bumps. Whereby it stands up slightly when braking in an inclined position.
Both fork and shock absorber have been retuned. The chassis provides very good feedback. It responds sensitively and with emphasis on comfort, but on the other hand is sporty, firm and puncture-proof. And if Rudi with the Duke should still stick to the rear wheel by the end of the combination of curves, then just tear the shower open … Cherry, forget the old Africa Twin, which is lumbering in the garage after the last fall. You’ll never put it together again anyway. The new Z 750 has the right mix of body and soul. Its predecessor sold 62013 times in Europe in three years and has been number one in the registration statistics in France in the last two years. For 7895 euros
there is exactly what you have always dreamed of: a cheekily styled precision instrument suitable for everyday use for curve carving, alpenglow and ultimately to spice up life with a good pinch of freedom. It will be available from the dealer from mid-April. By the way: Since the Z is now equipped with an immobilizer as standard, you can easily park it at Acki Schmidt’s front door…
