Driving report KMS-KTM LC8 Supermoto

Narrow animal

The KMS LC8 Supermoto based on the KTM 950 Adventure combines an animal walking two-cylinder with a slim design. Endless fun?

The driving report of the KTM 950 Supermoto (MOTORRAD 20/2004) made the mouths of many drift fans watery. However, it is still a damn long time until delivery in May 2005. If you don’t want to wait, you can get a Supermoto twin-cylinder based on the Adventure from the Swiss KTM specialist KMS.
Given the mighty dimensions of the desert ship, it should be clear that the conversion from the enduro to the agile street car with 17-inch wheels is not done. Supermotos are handy speedsters, so a small tank had to replace the two large fuel tanks on the Adventure.
But this is exactly where the problem begins, because there is hardly any space above the engine next to the voluminous airbox and the wide lattice frame. The delicate carbon tank from KMS holds just six liters. That’s enough for a couple of hot laps on a kart track, but not for everyday use. The idea: a second, nine-liter tank under the
The bench, also made of the finest carbon fiber, creates the minimum capacity required for road use. Slim radiator covers from the LC4 complete the slim silhouette. The cladding of a Husaberg is slipped over the stern, from which the bench comes from.
With these parts the result is an incredibly narrow machine, there is practically no difference to the single cylinder. Only the large distance to the handlebar indicates that a powerful two-cylinder is working half a meter below. The technology of the Adventure is under the new dress. The brake system remained untouched, the suspension elements were merely adjusted in terms of the setting.
However, there is still room for improvement in this regard. Because at the current stage, the straight-line stability leaves something to be desired. Due to the smaller front wheel, the front sags by a few centimeters, which makes the steering head angle steeper and the caster shorter. The KMS team should counteract this by shortening the rear suspension travel and, if necessary, using triple clamps with a different offset. A tighter coordination of the front end would also be helpful.
With the current set-up, the KMS-KTM tends to be nervous at speeds over 150 km / h that inspires respect at top speed. So we are content with the medium speed range, there the driving pleasure is unlimited. The fantastic handling is convincing, which is underlined by the ultra-slim line. The adventure brakes are sufficient in solo-
Operation. Although the double-piston floating calipers don’t quite offer the bite of four-piston pliers, spectacular stoppies or high-speed braking slides are easy with the KMS Supermoto.
The complete motorcycle at KMS costs 14,480 euros. Certainly not a special offer, but a reasonable price due to the high quality workmanship. The Supermoto conversion kit for the Adventure, which costs 3900 euros, should also be of interest. All parts are as well
available individually, details and further information can be found at www.kms-racing.ch.
