Now for the test drive with the 125 Duke. This shows that the KTM 125 Duke is not old and prudish, but that it is a real street sweeper.

Driving report: KTM 125 Duke
Driving Duke is addicting – but neither the law nor good reasons speak against the 125cc entry-level drug: The fun is highly legal and affordable.
E.die-hard Duke riders know it: once sat in the saddle and savored the sheer fun of riding a 690 or Superduke, the unfortunate people who are hooked can only be separated from the bike with surgical means or rough violence. Now 16-year-olds are threatened with this fate, because the Austrians will be offering the 125cc entry-level Duke from the end of April.

Especially since the stages of the six-speed transmission are cleverly spread in order to offer the right connection at all times. The modern twin-camshaft engine increases its speed gently but firmly when the lover in the saddle wants to accelerate from 2000 rpm. Nobody has to starve to death, but the 125 cc only gets the right revving up from 6000 tours. Now the fun begins, the speed quickly strives into five-digit regions, at 10500 rpm the (adjustable) gearshift light warns, only at 11000 rpm the limiter waves away. If you want to know, you can reach 112 km / h on the straight with big ears according to the speedometer, which should probably correspond to real 105 things, just within the tolerance range of the 100 km / h limited (ex works with 80 km / h throttle version for adult A1 driver’s license holders.

Typical Duke face: the 125cc looks quite beefy from the front thanks to its thick fork and wide tank.
But top speed alone is not important, the Duke only unfolds its true potential on the mountainous, extremely winding handling course. Here everyone with a drop of gasoline in their blood drives themselves into a real corner frenzy. Turning in, bending – everything happens automatically, with almost no effort, but the precision in long curves does not suffer in any way. Shift down hard, brake sharply, fold left, immediately turn right, out of the curve and in a wide arc towards the uphill passage. Dagdagdag – the limiter reminds itself, okay, shift up and take momentum into the curve – only uphill you miss the thump of the larger-displacement Duke sisters.
Before the hairpin bend again, the four-piston brake from Bybre, the Indian Brembo subsidiary, does its job very well, does not grip too hard, but always crisp, can be dosed well – fine thing. The tires also come from India (from MRF) and soon give the lie to initial skepticism. After a few rounds you develop the pure "Gluing pleasure" And, according to KTM PR man Thomas Kuttruf, they should even achieve decent mileage despite the rubber compound with good grip. Incidentally, the Duke is also manufactured in India, for cost reasons, but according to KTM quality criteria, of course. In general, the newcomer pretends to be very cosmopolitan, as she gets her cast aluminum wheels from Italy, the plastic parts from Spain and the WP spring elements from, exactly, her home country Austria. Enough boozy, consuming too much of the curve drug makes you dizzy.
Out to them "box", Time for a critical look at the standing work of art. The careful workmanship barely reveals any weaknesses or loveless details, and nowhere has been spared.
The mighty 43-millimeter upside-down fork seems to be used as evidence. Only the steel silencer, which is placed in front of the shock absorber with a favorable center of gravity, but painted black, could be criticized. But for that, KTM offers in its lush, Power Parts range of accessories for less than 400 euros replacement in the form of a razor-sharp designed one "real", laterally mounted aluminum muffler. Like the Duke itself, it is not available from the seedy dealer on the corner, but from the reputable KTM dealer.
For 3995 euros, the buyer purchases the basis for the Duke high, which he can now enjoy when he wants and as often as he wants. Withdrawal? Difficult to impossible. Unless by switching to the next harder variant, the 690 or the Superduke. The active ingredient remains the same, only the dose is increased. Actually, the Duke should be recommended by the Minister of Health.
