Mash X-Ride 650 Classic in the driving report
Relaxed time travel to the 80s
With the X-Ride 650 Classic, Mash is bringing an enduro with a 650 stew in the look of the legendary Yamaha XT 500. MOTORRAD has already been able to ride the single.
You don’t have to talk about it: Of course, this beautiful machine borrows from the legendary Yamaha XT 500, built from 1976 onwards. Why not? Exactly like this, equipped with a robust single and spoked wheels, the M.ash X-Ride 650 Classic. It is supposed to revive the blissful 80s, the decade of defining music and stylish motorcycles. It was conceived and developed in France from 2017, and is being built by Shineray in China. It doesn’t have to be bad when French chic meets Chinese efficiency and a Japanese is the godfather.
Under Japanese influence
Only one? More like two. Because the exactly 644 cm³ large, black coated single cylinder is based on the XL-Single from the Honda Dominator from 1988. Although Honda was not involved in the development, the China engine has an identical 100 piston with 82 millimeters stroke. As with the NX 650, the four valves are arranged radially. Legitimate 1: 1 copy? Technical bow to a great engine, argues Mash. So they ride in spirit, the rustic Yamaha and the easy-going Honda. Leger and chic, the snow-white X-Ride 650 Classic leans on its side stand. "We wanted to build something that is no longer available", says Mash. Operation completely successful.
Bold look, but not enduro
The 650s are characterized by a wild, daring look. Chic, cool and charming. Gold-colored rims go well with the Classic just like the cross boots with off-road riding. The flat fork with double axle clamping looks long. On the one hand, they lack classic enduro bellows. On the other hand, only 17-inch wheels rotate at the front and rear (guided by a beautifully crafted aluminum swing arm with fine dropouts). Despite studded tires, this is not a real enduro. On the other hand, just under 130 millimeters of spring travel both front and rear speak against it. Hmm, a super moto that disguises itself as an enduro? Let’s just agree on scramblers.
Mash
Sit up: The sitting position is compact. Even under 1.75 meters you can get both feet safely on the ground. Serrated enduro notches have a martial effect. Long guys find it a little difficult – if you slide back on the quilted, 84 centimeter high, not excessively wide bench, you are sitting in the middle of the ascending transition to the pillion seat. The 12-liter steel tank is short, wide and beefy. It offers ample knee grip. Power on, the broad one "Cross handlebars" grab with rally strut. There is a dull rumble from the double-pipe trumpet from the raised exhaust. Well, you could only dream of 40 HP rated power on an XT 500. Even more so from an electric starter.
650s with enough punch
Not a super smooth one "Pussy clutch" is the clutch, it takes two or three fingers to pull. Sure, a 650 stew, that was something, was once considered a "Steam hammer." The four-valve engine with oil cooler for the benefit of a healthy thermal balance comes to life in third gear from 2,500 rpm. In the final fifth gear it hacks under 3,000 tours. In any case, there is enough punch in the middle of the speed. All in all, the European injection from Delphi – without an oracle – has the single cylinder well under control. He hangs properly, not aggressively on the gas, is homologated as a pre-series variant according to Euro 4. Euro 5 machines with modified mapping are scheduled to go on sale from February.
You feel what the engine needs and wants. You can actually save yourself a look at the tachometer needle. The single seems a bit tough in fifth gear, downshifting into fourth helps him get on with overtaking. You are surfing on a sufficiently powerful, non-foaming torque wave. Easy going, voluntarily drive between 80 and 120 km / h. The vibrations beyond 5,000 tours are robust to rough. But turn that high? You don’t even need it on small streets in the border triangle Germany-Netherlands-Belgium. It’s a nice city-country-river engine. With a not that wide range of speeds.
Chassis can do more than expected
The undercarriage takes its horror away from unpleasant terrain and its sharpness from rough heels. You feel the road surface without ever suffering from it. It has to be tough before the shock absorber with expansion tank reaches its limits and breaks through. Neither fork nor strut are adjustable. Well, then you can’t go wrong as a driver … The Chinese, roughly profiled Kenda tires in sizes 120 / 70-17 and 150 / 60-17 are made of wood. They take a long time to get warm. It takes time to build trust in liability, to interpret the low level of feedback correctly: What works and what doesn’t? Quite simply: feel it.
The is stuck on rugged dirt roads "I-pretend-enduro" more one than expected. The small turning circle creates trust. The radially mounted four-piston fixed caliper in the front wheel bites powerfully, but never furiously, on the single 320 disc. The rear stopper (single-piston floating caliper) is also elegantly anodized in gold. For off-road use, yes, the ABS, which is reliable on asphalt, can be switched off. Which brings us to the design of the Mash: The small engine guard and start number fields on the left and right have a good effect. They are integrated into the beautifully aesthetically designed side covers with enclosed ventilation grids.
Weaknesses in processing
Is LED lighting a style break with this classic from the box? The relatively small scales for the speedometer, fuel gauge and odometer are not exactly compatible with varifocals. The simplest handlebar fittings, all too open-hearted electrical plug connections and cheap screws everywhere are a bit off-putting. And the badly pizzled weld seams on the steel frame, especially around the steering head, you wouldn’t even get one "pen" let go in the first year of training. As always, the engine oil for the dry sump lubrication is stored in the upper steel frame tube. Well, for the all-inclusive price of 6,164 euros, it is still a likeable and, in its own way, very neat motorcycle.
Conclusion
For a little over 6,000 euros, the Mash X-Ride 650 Classic combines stylish, great retro design with a type of relaxed motorcycle riding that has almost been believed to be forgotten: Better motorized than any hiking enduro, slower and much lighter than any current travel enduro. It’s fun, really. The X-Ride 650 Classic sees itself as the start of a whole family: So let’s look forward to the real Enduro with 18/21 inch tires that Mash plans to bring in spring 2021. With an adjustable chassis.
