Driving report Royal Enfield Bullet 500

Holy cow

Noh the Edel-Enfield from issue 11/2005, now a live report from the saddle of the standard version. It stands there authentically and genuinely, the Royal
Enfield Bullet 500. Practically everything about it is solid metallic, chrome-plated, lacquered and brushed. Your mudguards are to be taken literally, the golden decorative lines hand-lined. But it is not a classic car, but a new machine. One of around one million that have rolled off the production lines in Madras, India since 1955. On the occasion of this milestone anniversary, the German importer, the Zulpicher Motorradtechnik company, is offering the 500 for an incredible 2999 euros at 102 dealers. Classic can hardly be cheaper.
At most, more willing to start, because the beautiful Indian with the English genes is on strike. Ah, the ignition contacts weren’t right. The approach is a meditative act. Is everything right? Choke? Actuated. Fuel tap? On. Kickstarter in the right position? Yes. Neutral? Inside ?? a control lamp is missing. Hold on, look deep into the face at the spark plug. Was wet from playing in vain. But now. Immerse yourself in the interior, step! The 500-
Single spits, spits, gasps. A stable idle is out of the question, only constant throttle thrusts keep the two-valve engine on
Life. A whole red phase, at the busiest intersection in town.
Finally green. Klock, engine off. Get up on the sidewalk. Push, kick,
gasp. The empire strikes back, via the now somewhat loose Kickstarter. Go on, finally. The
perhaps the longest silencer in the world is not necessarily the quietest when stationary. 94 decibels at 2750 tours, any questions? Starting off in second gear is no problem for the Langhuber. More like the clockwise shift for the brain. The first is on top, so shifting up to the three other gears means stepping down. The switching travel is measured almost in meters. But please: For an extra charge of 900 euros there is an electric starter and five-speed gearbox with left-hand gear.
Mileage 39, oil mist on the cylinder head. The valve lifter is a little loose. Just like the adventurously relocated throttle cable. Traffic light sprints against CDI-Daimler need to be carefully considered in view of the 22 hp. And yet you feel close to enlightenment, constantly discovering new things on the home route. Desires to overtake give way to inner calm. Bike Buddhism, gentle and peaceful. Good vibrations make the barely dampened speedometer needle dance. At Vmax it shows 120 shakily. The holy one is not a hasty cow. An SR 500, on the other hand, was a superbike. And a GPZ 900 R from 1983, Darth Vader’s company car.
Still a great experience, the Enfield
catches more glances than an E-Glide.
The 182 kilogram »bullet«, as »bullet« is translated, falls into the first tight corners playfully, almost overhand. And amazingly accurate. A blessing, these narrow tires. The English Avon tires, they are called “Speedmaster” in all seriousness, are surprisingly good.
At higher speeds, from 50 upwards, the bullet stiffens significantly. Tribute to the high gyroscopic forces of the 19-inch wheels. The 35 mm upright tubes of the telescopic fork are fully encapsulated. Not dumb. And very comfortable. The struts also weigh
tender as a flying one
Carpet. Undamped, definitely, but the comfort is right. It’s like with the Trabi: Buy vehicles from countries with bad roads, then you are prepared for what happens to our roads.
The strongly cranked handlebars and the compact seating position are more suitable for
small driver natures. With inner greatness. Swing saddles? That was earlier. today
There is a continuous bench, but rigid footrests. Never mind, the lean angle is absolutely okay. The chaos is perfect only when it is delayed.
Praying and braking. The front single-duplex drum brake needs support from the stern, which is essential for survival.
If you concentrate, you can still find the foot lever on the left quite well, you can let it whistle at the back. If it has to be done quickly ?? on the bullet a contradiction in terms ?? one maltreated
only the rocker switch. It’s worth practicing
itself, because the bullet of the
Year 2055 still look the same.
Holy cows are not slaughtered. tsr
