Life between 2 and 3

More than 3000 revolutions are actually superfluous on the new Yamaha for speedy curve scraping…

The MOTORRAD technician recently explained the meaning of the word torque to a trainee: »You have to generate 50 Newton meters of torque to work over a 20 centimeter thick roller
Crank up two sacks of cement, ie 50 kilograms, on a rope. ”By way of comparison: To achieve its peak torque of 50 Nm, the crankshaft of the 650 Honda Deauville has to rotate 6600 times.
The new Yamaha MT-01 shakes 50 Newton meters out of its sleeve while idling. As soon as the starter made the enormous crankshaft rotate, one could theoretically do a
Rope around the stump of the crankshaft
Wrap the MT-01 and pull up two sacks of cement at idle, i.e. at around 850 rpm. And that without the throttle on the throttle even one like it
in Swabian means Muckeseggele (German: breath of a millimeter)
to open. The range of torque continues to grow: 100 Nm at 1200 / min, 140 Nm at 1900 / min, 150 Nm at 3750 / min. This tip finally marks the maxi-
paint punch of the extraordinary athlete.
As the design study of the MT-01 five years ago at the Tokyo Motor Show
was presented, the response from trade fair visitors was so huge that Yamaha
a small staff of technicians who made this project as original as possible-
should faithfully realize. It worked. Yamaha’s first torque sports bike, the daring mix of a fat V2 cruiser heart in a cornering chassis, was presented to journalists for the first time in the wild on November 6th.
The first impression is impressive. As mighty as a statue, the bike, which weighs around 260 kilograms with a full tank, remains on the filigree side stand. Stainless steel elbows wind their way into the two titanium silencers positioned high next to the seat. Like a wave, the rather flat and curved tank washes over the colossal engine, a 105-kilogram drive monster that at first glance looks like the engine twin of the Road Star Warrior. This impression is reinforced as most of the key data of the 1670 cm3 two-cylinder engine match. Nevertheless: The technicians of the team around the Japanese project manager Tominaga-San never tire of emphasizing that 90 percent of all components of the original Warrior drive have been revised or completely redesigned for use in the MT-01
were. After all, the V2 has lost around 20 kilograms.
Please take a seat. The upper body is bent slightly forward. The butted, wide handlebars sit comfortably in the hands.
The knee angle is correct for people between 1.65 and 1.90 meters, the bench is quite wide and comfortable. One last-
take a deep breath. Anticipation. Starter button. Two or three exhausted revolutions that you can literally count. Then finally: eruptions. Restrained thunder echoes from the two megaphones at the stern-
rumble, pulsing between the legs
gigantic precision mechanics. Two 97 pistons whistle over a distance of 113 millimeters. Bumpers as long as yards transmit the impulses from the two camshafts below to the rocker arms. Even the stripped-down crankshaft weighs almost 19 kilograms. No, nothing is filigree in this 48-degree V2. You can feel that. And that’s good.
Two throttles. Quickly one after the other. It rumbled angrily from the bags, greedily the speed skyrocketed. Any spontaneous opening of the two throttles-
klappen communicates something like waking a dozing dragon with a spear. How did the sound designers manage to wrest a TÜV stamp from the fabulously muffled, rich sound of the MT-01? Dear envious Italians, dear proud Americans, write their names on them
Solicitation List. Just the sound of the MT
is worth the sin of the purchase price of 13,295 euros.
Let’s go. First course, klonk. Second, third, fourth, fifth. Switching operations require emphasis. Load changes can be felt-
bar. From 2000 rpm, the full throttle command can be issued in any gear without hesitation. 1670 cm3 in connection with torque-
increasing subtleties like variable,
The suction cross-section controlled by vacuum and the Exup system, in which a servomotor changes the cross-section of the exhaust, guarantee ghostly draft even at the lowest speeds. Nothing jerks there. No reluctant shaking. No ugly, slapping, metallic noises. Just a mighty pulsation, a spirit that has apparently been freed from years of imprisonment and is immensely happy about freedom and the wind. Yamaha’s press poetry describes this pulsation of the drive as “kodo”, synonymous with the atmosphere that the beat of great Japanese drums creates. A rhythm that echoes in the hearts of the audience, in this case the driver.
Philosophized enough. At the end of the long straight, there is the first 180-degree bend. And thus also limitless
Curiosity. So far, only Buell has dared, a gigantic, swinging one
Transplant drive into a road chassis. The drawback: Bikes with large rotating engine masses love to drive straight ahead. 1200 Buells literally have to be forced into a sloping position. To the great surprise, this is not the case with the MT-01. The turn rushes up. Very
the speed can be effectively and perfectly controlled using the front, radially screwed brake calipers ?? identical to those of the YZF-R1 ?? throttle. The upside-down fork guides the bike smoothly on the ground, does not dip too deeply and provides very good feedback. Precise, and even extremely handy for its weight, the MT-01 folds over its Metzeler-ME Z4 tires in an inclined position and remains true to the ideal line. At least, as long as there are no major bumps. Because this type of surface disturbance leads the wide 190 slipper into the sporty, tightly tuned chassis. The MT tumbles. In addition, the basic setup of the shock absorber could be a little softer. Sensitivity is not his strong point.
The apex of the curve has been reached. A short straight appears in front of the digital, round instrument cluster. Third gear, 70 km / h, 3500 rpm. Turn the throttle slightly. But easy is too much. Nothing to me, nothing to you, the speed increases. The load
catapults himself out of the inclined position and zooms in towards the next. Only those who really travel very quickly
speed should be between 3500
get to the red area at 5500 rpm. This is where the high-performance part of the torque sports bike takes place.
Shortcoming: just after the maximum output of 90 hp turns at 4750 rpm
the engine a bit tougher. But it doesn’t matter. The powerful torque of the 1670 makes it possible to cover the speed range between zero and 210 km / h top speed within 4500 rpm. Without serious pulling weakness. Without the limiter, which starts at 5800 rpm, ever having to fulfill its purpose. The MT-01 shows its best muscle strength and thus also the area in which curves are smoothly surfed between 2000 and 3000 rpm. Why? First Kodo, second Sound. Third, power. This third-
mix of titanic torque, full exhaust rumble, greedy sipping of air from the seven-liter airbox and merciless propulsion is currently unique on the motorcycle market. In addition, the MT-01 is of high quality, very sexy and
easy to control despite its immense power.
Which brings us to the core question: Who should buy this motorcycle? Yamaha says: those who have had everything in their life. But how many are there actually? 1300 copies will be available from German dealers from February, around 8000 across Europe. Too much?
Too little? The MT-01 is ideal for both sporty and touristy drivers as well as cruiser fans and enthusiasts
the special fair. And who knows, maybe one or the other construction business owner will open his wallet. If necessary, the MT motor could act as a winch and pull up six bags of cement at the same time.

Yamaha Mt-01 Racing Kit

Yamaha offers MT-01 customers numerous lifestyle accessories from sunglasses to underpants. In addition, the motorcycle can be upgraded with various carbon panels, aluminum mirrors, a windscreen or a single bench seat. The manufacturer also offers three tuning levels. The first, two slip-ons-
Titanium silencer from exhaust specialist Akrapovic, has ABE and is only used for optical purposes. The second tuning stage consists of a complete titanium exhaust system from Akrapovic plus ECU (electronic control unit) and is designed exclusively for racing purposes. It increases the power from 90 to 100 hp. The third stage produces 110 hp and is also only designed for use on the racetrack. To do this, the ECU, valve and clutch springs, pistons and camshafts have to be replaced. There is also the Akrapovic titanium system and open suction-
funnel. In both stages two and three, the engine turns up to 6000 / min, i.e. around 500 / min higher.
In addition, the maximum torque is increased, but only reached later. At level one
the engine delivers around 155 Nm, in the second version 160 and in the third 170 Nm. Background of the tuning: Yamaha is planning a racing series in the preliminary program of MotoGP. The prices for the kits have not yet been determined.
