The botox bike: Since the MT-09 is neither really old nor a diva, its tightening measures do not consist of botox, but of Ohlins and KYB.

Driving report Yamaha MT-09 SP (2018)

The suspension update is convincing

The Yamaha MT-09 SP expands the MT-Naked-Bikes family by a noble version with a brutal three-cylinder engine. We could now drive the SP.

M.ith over 150,000 units sold, Yamaha’s MT series with the MT-125, MT-03, MT-07 and MT-09 is a constant in the naked bike market. About a third, namely a good 48,000 copies, were MT-09s in recent years. Reason to celebrate and a reason for a premium version of the three-cylinder neck donkey: the MT-09 SP is coming in 2018.

Yamaha

The evil eye suits her well; the MT-09 SP fully does justice to the aggressive attitude.

The abbreviation "SP" We already know from the MT-10 SP, it stands for a premium specification with a focus on particularly athletic performance. This also applies to the Yamaha MT-09 SP, which expresses this premium claim visually through a special paintwork and technically, above all, through high-quality chassis components. At the rear, an Ohlins shock absorber, which can be adjusted to the needs of the driver via an easily accessible remote adjuster, cushions. At the front, a fully adjustable Kayaba fork does its job and ensures a sporty, crisp feeling when cornering.

The new appearance is rounded off by a lot of black in the pilot’s field of vision, for example the handlebars, levers and steering head of the Yamaha MT-09 SP are presented in elegant black. The background of the cockpit display is also black, which is, as it were, a color-inverted version of the display already known from the MT-09 – in other words: white text and white displays on the aforementioned black background. This not only looks classy, but should also improve readability in daylight.

Suspension update is worthwhile

After the theoretical skirmish, we were able to ride the new Yamaha MT-09 SP for the first time in Portugal. The MT, which is pimped by means of a fully adjustable KYB upside-down fork and an also fully adjustable Ohlins shock absorber, sometimes gives the driver more feedback than he would like on pimply roads. But this changes as soon as the pace gets faster: Even in the factory settings, hardness becomes damping, and rigidity becomes precision. The new fork works with two springs, one soft and one hard. In addition, the compression level can be set separately for low and high-speed damping.

Yamaha

The front and rear suspension elements have been extensively upgraded for the SP version.

With the Ohlins shock absorber, the changes are much stronger. While the spring rate decreased compared to the standard leg, the damping force increased in the rebound stage. The compression damping tripled.

Since there was no possibility to play with the setup at the first ride, only the detailed test can show what potential the new chassis really offers.

Nevertheless, we can already attest to the fact that the € 1,200 surcharge on the standard MT, which is still on offer, is particularly worthwhile for fans of the speedy driving style. The engine and everything else remained completely rightly unchanged.

Yamaha MT-09 SP from 10,195 euros

Like the standard version of the Yamaha MT-09 for the 2018 model year, the SP variant is also equipped as standard with an anti-hopping clutch and a shift assistant for upshifting.

Yamaha

The fork works with two different springs and is fully adjustable.

Otherwise, the technical data is largely the same for both versions. The 847 cm³ three-cylinder develops 115 hp at 10,000 rpm, and its maximum torque of 87.5 Nm is at 8,500 rpm. Front and rear the MT-09 SP stands on 17 inch tires in the dimensions 120/70 and 180/55, the 10-spoke rims are painted blue. This goes well with the special paintwork of the tank, which combines silver side elements with blue upper sections.

The seat height can be adjusted to 820 or 865 millimeters; with a full 14 liter tank, the naked bike weighs 215 kilograms. The Yamaha MT-09 SP will be available from 10,195 euros (plus 180 euros for ancillary costs).
