Driving report Yamaha WR 250 F
Huge upgrade for the sports enduro
After years of restraint, the Yamaha WR 250 F has now been greatly upgraded for the 2015 season. A technically avant-garde sport enduro was created on the basis of the motocross model. MOTORRAD went on a joyride with it.
For many years, the development of Yamaha sports enduros followed a clear hierarchy: Changes to the motocrossers (abbreviation YZ) usually benefited the enduro colleagues (WR) one season later. The renewal cycles have now stretched. The WR 450 F was not allowed to take over the engine of the YZ 450 F, which was presented in 2010. In this respect, her little sister can Yamaha WR 250 F can now look forward to prompt attention. The technical basis of the new baby enduro is provided by the quarter-liter Crosser YZ 250 F, which was only completely redesigned for the 2014 season.

Huge upgrade for the sports enduro
The Yamaha WR 250 F clearly represents the face in the crowd of sport enduros. The cylinder tilts backwards from the vertical at an angle of 6.2 degrees, so that the weight and above all the rotating masses of the two camshafts are closer to the center of gravity Machine move. The upturned cylinder head (inlet at the front, outlet at the rear) has no counterpart in off-road technology at the moment. A more straight intake path from the air filter for injection, which is located behind the steering head, is supposed to generate more power, while the long manifold around the cylinder is supposed to increase the torque in the lower speed range. How much effort the Japanese put into making the Crosser fit for the undergrowth is impressive. In addition to the usual modifications such as an 18-inch rear wheel, quieter silencer and cooler fan, the list includes a wide-spread six-speed gearbox (YZ 250 F: five gears), a reinforced clutch and the engine housing modified for an electric starter.
The singles focus is on high speeds
So button pressed, gear in, departure. The subtle sound from the silencer is quickly overlaid by snorkeling from the intake tract. Those familiar with the scene are reminded of the acoustics of the former Husaberg models. The ergonomics fit. The front, which in the first YZ models of the new generation was still voluminous due to the airbox, is now slimmer and is insignificantly wider than in conventional concepts. With the handlebars, which can be adjusted to a total of four positions, every driver can find their favorite position on the Yamaha WR 250 F. For taller riders, the foremost position allows sufficient freedom of movement – and in tight bends to put pressure on the front wheel.
What the 250 actually doesn’t need at all. Because, as is traditionally known from the Yamaha off-roaders, the front bites into the ground, making the Yamaha WR 250 F effortlessly draw tight radii. A clear advantage, especially in less extensive and narrow special stages. Especially since the engine is extremely alert. A short pull on the clutch lever, which is still smooth-running, despite the harder springs, and the WR snaps lively through the rev range. Class-standard 36 HP peak performance is trusted by the unit. The record-breaking maximum speed of 13,500 tours (KTM: 12,800 / min), according to official information. Because although the stroke of 53.6 millimeters is longer than that of the Austrian top dog (52.3 mm), the focus of the unconventional single is clearly on high speeds. The little motor purrs, let it turn into the limiter on short intermediate straights, so that fast lap times are generated.

Especially since the chassis has also been tuned for high-speed use. In contrast to the deliberately soft spring elements of the previous WR generations, the monoshock and fork are now taut and offer plenty of reserves with plenty of progression. The other side of the coin is experienced by the WR rider on the stony single trails. The Kayaba SSS fork, which is conventionally equipped with one spring per fork leg, is particularly reluctant to swallow small bumps. Strange: In the YZ models, the same fork works great. In this respect, it may only need a little more break-in time for a little more sensitivity in the enduro.
The monoshock is smoother. Ten millimeters more installation length should compensate for the larger static sag chosen in the Enduro. Whether it’s the vote or the generally tame bite in the lower speed range in this displacement class is an open question. But the fact is: relieving the Yamaha WR 250 F with a short thrust of the gas over transverse channels or catapulting it into a lane is not as easy as with some competitors. Unless you help the pressure in the lower rev range with the Akrapovic silencer offered as an original accessory (630 euros). This makes the single-cylinder respond noticeably more spontaneous and underlines the already sporty character of the 250cc. The Yamaha WR 250 F will be available from dealers from March.
