An intense red, a powerful sound, fins on the fairing – this is what makes you want to appreciate this Ducati up close. Receiving their first evolution, the 1100 Panigale V4 and here V4 S reduce their differences with the V4 R. Apart from the brushed aluminum tank, it is now almost impossible to differentiate them.
This mimicry is obvious with the adoption of the fins on the cheeks of the Panigale. Offering downforce at high speed to stabilize the steering, they are part of the aerodynamic package that Ducati implements in all Panigale V4s – the V2 takes advantage of this to preserve the purer style of the older generation. In addition to the winglets, these hypersports increase protection with a larger bubble, a fork crown enlarged by 15 mm on both sides, and sidewalls widened by 38 mm. The cooling is optimized with the shark gills, the air gaining 6% efficiency for the water radiator and 16% for the oil one.
An observation on the fins allows to appreciate the technical and racing side; and their plastoc design. Still goes on the standard Panigale V4. But frankly petty on the S, more premium and costing an arm – carbon elements like the V4 R would have tasted better..
Slight changes to the chassis are also there. The frame is now that of the R, more rigid from the front. A 4mm lower fork, 2mm shorter shock absorber and a few other mods raise the center of gravity by 5mm. It doesn’t look like much but it makes it more responsive and more stable under acceleration. A little more preload up front and softer springs are supposed to filter out road imperfections better..
The guts remain the main difference between the R and the S. The engine is calibrated for the WSBK on one side, while it overcomes the regulatory limits by taking advantage of 1103 cm3 on the other. Violent road-approved missile, with great desire for the circuit. In pure mechanics, no evolutions. It is the electronic part that receives updates, with revised maps, the EVO 2 for traction control (more responsive and predictive) and the shifter, even faster.
From the outset, the Panigale V4 S sublimates with its exquisite legs. The golden color grabs the eye as much as the pituitary gland, especially when you know the quality of Ohlins elements. The ground liaison job will be most efficient with a leading team: NIX 30 inverted fork, TTX36 shock absorber, and electronic control via the Smart EC 2.0 system..
Everyone has the choice: adjust the suspensions themselves via the on-board computer, or let the electronics adapt in real time. In the first case, we fine-tune the compression and rebound as well as the force of the steering damper by ‘virtual clicks’ – 32 in number for the suspension and 10 for the steering..
In dynamic mode, the processors take over. Informed by the 6-axis inertial unit and other sensors, the system automatically adapts the damping according to the road and driving while taking into account the chosen Driving Mode. Caviar for a diva.
The V4 provides something to run around with sickly vigor. Its 1103 cm3 prevent it from competing (there is the R for that) but send 214 horsepower and a large 12.7 mkg. On the other hand, it has less mass to lift. The Panigale V4 S is reduced by 3 kilos from the standard, for a total of 195. A gain obtained thanks to the Lithium-Ion battery and Marchesini forged aluminum rims.
No change in the technical side and on-board assistance – except the Ohlins Smart EC already described. No need, the machine is already armored with everything Ducati can do. The Panigale V4 benefit from a perimeter type frame with strong support on the engine. Braking is provided by the latest generation of Brembo calipers, Stylemas even more efficient than the M50s. As for the general dynamics, it is under the control of the pilot, assisted by many lieutenants. They are numerous and active. The stopped start assistant, the active ABS in curves, the slip control, and the evolutions of the other modules which are the traction control, the up / down shifter, the anti-wheeling, and the engine brake control . The Riding Modes oversee all of this as follows:
Race – As the name suggests, the Riding Mode Race has been developed for experienced riders who want to make the most of the full potential of the V4 Panigale on the racetrack. By selecting Race, the rider can count on 214 hp, with direct throttle response and harder suspension tuning for high performance. This racing mode implies by default a weak intervention of electronic assistance, without however compromising the safety, with the ABS intervening only on the front wheel to offer maximum braking, but with the Cornering function always active..
Sport – By selecting the Sport mode, the 214 horsepower is delivered in a sporty manner, as is the damping. The electronic controls are adjusted so that pilots are a little less sharp while maintaining efficiency and spectacular driving. For example, brake drift control is active, which allows the rear wheel to slip when cornering. Rear wheel lift control is active and ABS cornering is configured to provide maximum cornering performance.
Street – Street mode is best suited for the road of the Panigale V4. The throttle response is more gradual for the 214 horsepower. The suspensions are softer and more able to absorb bumps. The default setting of the electronic controls ensures maximum safety, ensuring the best grip and maximum stability.
The S versions have long magnified Ducati sports cars. With this generation, this new history, this strong identity, sport takes a whole new turn. For those who want to take their devotion to this Superbike up a notch, the brand offers the Speciale version; ready to trace anything that rolls. For pure competition and an even higher level of power, the Panigale V4 R sets new and crazy references.
