Since the name R has existed at Ducati, each model bearing this logo exalts this perfume of fantasy, luxury and sportiness. Superb pretext for refinement due to the homologation in the Superbike championship, these quasi-compe-customers sweat the race from the 996 R to the culmination of this 1199 Panigale R.
Exceptional? Not that much. Oh yes, it’s a technological delight, but that doesn’t amaze us as much as every generation of R’s compared to the S version. Disappointed? Almost. It smells of the tricolor S version with a few parts of the Ducati Corse rather than a real exceptional machine. More power? No, the 1199 Panigale R develops the same 195 horsepower as the other versions. A new mapping and a refinement of the ride-by-wire are invited in the engine management (this update will be applied to all Panigales). The interior of the Superquadro twin is still entitled to some exclusives: titanium connecting rods, which save 630 grams.,
are associated with a lighter crankshaft and rockers with DLC treatment to make it gain 500 rpm. We salute the performance: 12,000 rpm maximum for a 1200 twin cylinder with 112 mm bowls.
The 1199 Panigale R will be sold with an R kit, consisting of a racing screen, a machined alloy spider, and a complete Termignoni exhaust with dedicated mapping. This kit makes it possible to gain 3% of power at high speeds and 15% at mid-speeds. A USB key is used to unlock / re-clamp the ECU. To further improve acceleration, a 41-tooth crown wheel (2 more than originally) is provided.
The Bologna superbike offers here an adjustable oscillating arm on 4 anchoring points thanks to two eccentric adjusters. Lightweight Marchesini forged rims further optimize the chassis. Carbon is obviously present, as in any self-respecting R. Ah, on the other hand, forget the full carbon trim as in the old days. There are a little everywhere (swingarm protection, clutch cover protection, rear shell, rear fender, heel protectors, starter surround and fork crown interior) but macache for the fairing. Scandalous! I suspected that this exceptional sports car had a carbon self-supporting saddle and unknown delicacies.
Let’s console ourselves with the on-board equipment: sport ABS, Brembo monobloc M50 calipers, data acquisition by GPS, brushed aluminum tank, shifter, traction control, engine brake management, triple injection mapping, NIX 30 fork and shock absorber TTX36 with electric adjustments from Ohlins, and 1.5 kilos less than the 1199 Panigale S Tricolore.
And for once, the R is not the lightest in the range: it is 1 kg more than the base Panigale, i.e. 165 kilos dry.
Consolation prize: its 31,990 euros mark a clear deflation in the R family. 6,500 euros less than the 1098 R Corsican edition.
