Although the Panigale V4 is entering its second year in the catalog, and its variations have enough to satisfy the most voracious appetites (S, Speciale, R), the last of the Panigale powered by a twin continues its career. It must be said that it is very tempting (and expensive) for fans of the model. This is one of the most exceptional motorcycles of the Panigale series that Ducati will have produced. And with a highly symbolic image: it represents the last of its line and the history of V2 hypersport for the Italian manufacturer. A huge page is turned, and it took a machine full of symbolism to close 30 years of thrill. Since the birth of the 851, Ducati has been able to place its L-twin in the strongest chapters in the history of the Superbike. A passion, sometimes violent, always demanding, which culminates in the 1299 Panigale R Final Edition. A designation shared with the last 998 S, which marked the culmination of the famous 916; a whole story, a whole legend.
An exceptional, exclusive motorcycle, born out of respect and admiration for the engine that made Ducati history and set the record books in the World Superbike Championship. The new 1299 Panigale R is more than a motorcycle with a dedicated color or just a numbered series. A tricolor dress pays homage to the iconic Ducati twin-cylinder, which reached its peak on this machine. A decoration that the brand knows how to use on emblematic models: the first 851, the 1098 S, the 1199 Panigale S, or the Monster S4Rs.
For its world premiere, Ducati has chosen the 8th round of the SBK World Championship, taking place this weekend at Laguna Seca (California-US), where Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, presented the new 1299 Panigale R Final Edition with Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri (the two official Ducati- Aruba.it Racing drivers).
This latest gem produced in Bologna offers unprecedented technology, performance and design. Euro 4 approved for the road, each 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is individually numbered (without being limited in production). Derived from the 1299 Superleggera engine, the Final Edition Superquadro develops a power of 209 hp at 11,000 rpm and a torque of 14.5 kgm at 9,000 rpm. It features a lighter crankshaft with a larger crank pin and tungsten balance weights, while the connecting rods, like the exhaust valves, are made of titanium. As on the Superbike engines, the two 116 mm diameter pistons have only two segments and slide in steel liners.
Developed by the Ducati Corse, the ultra-compact monocoque structure integrates the airbox and plays an essential role in reducing the dry weight of this Final Edition to just 179 kg.
The chassis configuration of this latest Ducati supersport is identical to that of the Panigale R, characterized by Ohlins mechanical suspensions and a caster angle of 24 °.
The Akrapovic titanium exhaust system with double silencer (Euro 4 approved) is just as sophisticated and light as that fitted to the Panigale R registered in the World Superbike Championship.
The on-board electronics incorporate an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and are equipped with cornering ABS, Ducati EVO anti-wheeling control (DWC EVO), and Ducati EVO Traction Control (DTC EVO) and Steering Control. engine brake (EBC). These systems have default settings, defined according to the riding modes (Race, Sport and Wet) but can be fully customized..
“I am incredibly proud to be able to present this latest version of our Panigale”, proclaimed Claudio Domenicali during the presentation. “Without doubt no other motorcycle brand than Ducati has linked its name as closely with an engine as Ducati with its sporty twin. Today we are here to celebrate its history, we are on the cusp of a new era where our desmodromic system will be used for a new generation of V4 engines, derived from our vast experience in MotoGP, a championship in which our engine has demonstrated exceptional performance. But this is the future. Today we want pay homage to the twin-cylinder engine which – thanks to its phenomenal torque and compactness – has given Ducati numerous victories in every SBK championship it has entered. In short, it is the quintessential engine that has marked World history Superbike. From Marco Lucchinelli’s first victory on April 3, 1988 with the 851 at Donington Park (in the very first World Championship for modified models from a series) to the victories of Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri in the Panigale R, Ducati has won no less than 333 races and won 17 Constructors ‘titles and 14 Drivers’ titles. “
