It was almost certain that the 1098 would not defend Ducati’s new sporting profile for long on its own. A year after the presentation of the superb Italian Superbike, the Bologna factory shelved the 749 and launched the 848. This perfect copy of the 1098 is only distinguished by the cubic capacity of its twin and certain different peripherals.. But the face remains the same, and still makes us drool as much.
With 250 cm3 less, the twin necessarily pulls out less power than its big brother Superbike. But this does not mean that it is a 1098 on the cheap, far from it. The 848 benefits from all the experience and technology developed for its predecessor. The beautiful can thus be proud of a power of 134 hp and a minimum weight of 168 kg. Excuse the little, but it is frankly remarkable. Consider that Ducati’s first twin with 4 valves per cylinder and liquid cooling, the 851, cubed 3 cm3 more and spat 32 horsepower less. And comparing with the 749, its predecessor, the 848 is 30% more powerful. A good dose of torque of almost 10 mkg further strengthens the thrust of the large twin.
Even if this engine does not correspond to any category approved in competition (for the moment), it still benefits from the little care of the Bologna engine manufacturers. Closely derived from the 1098 block, it is also fed by elliptical intake ducts, the angle between the valves is the same (their diameter is 39.5 mm at the intake and 32 mm at the exhaust) , the cylinder head covers are in magnesium as on the 1098 R, the radiator and the exhausts are entitled to the same technology as those of the 1098.
By starting the engine, diehard Ducatists will be shocked. The clutch will no longer make any noise: it is now in an oil bath. Sacrilege! A Ducat ‘sports car has always had a dry clutch. Well, not anymore, especially when it saves 1.6 kg. The hunt for weight, the brand also practices it on engine casings. The die-casting technology has saved 3 kg on this station.
The chassis of the 848 is slightly different from that of the 1098. The diameter of the main tubes is reduced from 28 to 34 mm while their thickness has been reduced from 2 to 1.5 mm. This saves 14% stiffness and 1.5 kg on the frame. Not bad is not it ?!? Clinging to its ends, we find a 43mm Showa inverted fork, Brembo monobloc radial calipers, 320mm brake discs (330 on the 1098), the superb and single-sided swingarm, lighter Marchesini rims (- 250 gr at the front; – 1 kg at the rear.). Weighing 168 kg, the 848 can now compete on the scale with the 600 Japanese supersports. When you think that the 749 weighed 20 kg more, you measure all the work done in a generation of machines..
2010 – Appearance of a Dark version, that is to say economical, the paint being replaced by a black primer. Its price drops in this version of 500 euros.
