“Impregnable! It’s THE WEAPON on mountain roads. This is how Fanfan summed up Ducat’s 1100 Hypermotard. A great machine concocted by the Bologna factory, which lives up to its name. Only downside to this somewhat exclusive toy, its price. The machine flirts with high-end prices. So Ducati is offering it a much more affordable version with a new almost 800cc engine. Here is for 2010 the 796 Hypermotard.

A cylinder capacity revised downwards to open up to a greater number without sacrificing the HM spirit. Indeed, the 796 retains feature by feature the uncompromising line of the 1100, even retaining an inverted fork completed by radial brake calipers, the all-digital dashboard, the pots under the saddle as well as the single-sided did not expect to find such a part on a model advertised at 8,990 euros…. though – the 800 Monster S2R fire was also equipped with it.
But let’s be interested in this new twin installed in the small Hypermotard. Cubing in fact 803 cm3 (but the marketing retained the designation 796 …), this oil-cooled desmodromic mill announces the same bore (88 mm) as that of the 696 Monster for a longer stroke (66 mm ) than the latter. It delivers a chouïa more power than the 696, or 81 horsepower. It is above all its torque that will make the difference: 7.7 mkg spread over a much more usable range.

The 696 Hypermotard is just as attractive as the big brother 1100 while being much more accessible. It’s a featherweight 167 kg dry, with a seat height of 825mm – 20mm less than the 1100 – and an APTC clutch. This system, introduced on the 620 Monster, reduces lever effort, acts as a torque shock absorber and prevents the rear wheel from locking up during aggressive downshifts..
The 796 HM will be available in a discreet mix of white and black. The red version, more traditional and remarkable, will require a small effort of 310 euros additional.
