Ducati Monster EVO 1100
Ducati’s naked bike in the test
Content of
The monster family is complete again. With the 1100 Evo, Ducati has completed the renovation work on the naked bike series and has launched a pure country road toy.
With the term "cult" you should be really careful. What wasn’t all cult. But hardly anything was proclaimed a cult when it was often enough out again. Cult bands that nobody knows anymore, cult films that nobody has seen, cult drinks, all of which got bad the first time. Tea D.ucati Monster is indeed a cult. Because since 1993 it has sold almost 250,000 times worldwide. She was the cash cow of the reds from Borgo Panigale, thanks to which Ducati was even allowed to think of Grand Prix racing. And these two-cylinder naked bikes have recruited loads of fresh fans for the brand over the years.
Even the youngest monster shouldn’t change that. But on the contrary. Because PS had its problems over the years, especially with the ergonomics, which dragged the driver far over the tank, the rough engine below, the stiff clutch, the brute, difficult-to-dose brake and other nippy things, then the 1100 Evo is accurate the correct answer to all of our criticism.
The new ergonomics that came up last year with the smaller Monster 796 now also embed the 1100 Ducatista in an active, sporty and yet sufficiently comfortable manner. It could be ironed up and down the Sicilian Etna volcano on wonderfully twisted roads. The monsters thrilled with their accuracy in long and fast arcs, let themselves be thrown from one sloping position to the other in tight alternating curves and were also otherwise characterized by their playful handling. Certainly thanks to the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II.
The fact that the chassis with the new 43 mm Marzocchi fork and the Sachs shock absorber could have been a bit crisper can be excused with a lack of time. Because the schedule was just too tight to coordinate the two fully adjustable parts.
Even for a deeper insight into the four-stage, standard traction control, there should have been a turn or two to the summit. But here and there, something provoked, the electronics intervened very gently. The so-called Ducati Safety Pack also includes an ABS as standard on the big Monster, which regulates late in a sporty way, just as we like it. However, the brakes were a bit dull overall – for our taste, Ducati made up for a bit too much of the brute force of the old monster brakes.
In any case, the wet sump clutch is now extremely easy to operate and the gearbox slips. However, this is also necessary, because the twin with now nominally 100 hp requires an astonishing number of gear changes due to its characteristics for an 1100 engine. Only from 5000 rpm does it really work and then locks it off at 8000 rpm. From some angles this is a very tight usable performance range. One would have wished for a little more lard from below. But the V2 spoils you with good ones
Manners and especially in push mode with wonderful exhaust crackling. Simply cult.
PS judgment
The Monster 1100 Evo has turned out to be a really good country road motorcycle that greedily tackles fast and winding roads. The sports-minded Ducati Monster fan should still think about two things after the purchase: Maybe try a few other brake pads and put the monster under heavy pressure with the Power Commander.
