Ducati 998 2003

With this new development, the new descendant of the eternal 916 further consolidates the know-how of the Bologna factory. The Ducati’s dress remains, however with the disappearance of the ventilation openings on the fairing. The main change comes from the engine block. The twin takes a hint of displacement but above all is equipped with the very efficient “Testastretta” cylinder head. Inaugurated on the 996 R, it is distinguished by larger diameter valves whose closed angle has gone from 40 to 25 °; hence its name “narrow head”. With its larger bore, the engine gained horsepower at the top of the tachometer. With these modifications, the twin has not only gained in power but also in flexibility. We can resume lower on the last reports while benefiting from softer revs.

More efficient, this twin can count on the flawless cycle part of the Italian. The unmistakable trellis frame rigidly holds a large Showa inverted fork, while rear damping is in the hands of Ohlins. No need to worry about handling. The 998 remains faithful to its origins: rigorous in its road behavior and demanding with its driver. Broken in two and locked on his wrists, he will have to force the machine to enter the turn and hold it seriously in all phases of driving. Physical but also sporty.
The brake discs are thinner in order to reduce the gyroscopic effect. We would have especially appreciated an improvement in use. It slows down, hard, but you have to be authoritarian with the lever.
There is no doubt that the 998 still carries the Ducati colors high. smoother and more efficient than the 996, it announces beautiful moments of piloting on its handlebars. But keep the physiotherapist’s phone number handy.
