Adult toy and formidable machine in every turn, the Hypermotard changes dimension. Previously, you could choose it with a nice 796 cm3 engine or a grumpy 1100 cm3, faithful and umpteenth variations of the air desmo. This time is over! One block now, brand new, all boiling, 821 milliliters. And all around, a reshaped face, a revisited chassis and a desire to have fun even more tenacious. Ducati applies in this evolution. What are the promises of the 821 Hypermotard ?
This fresh, sparkling block brings to HM the little extra potato that it lacked. It uses much of the technology of the Multistrada twin. Cylinder heads type Testastretta, valve opening time at 11 °, injectors repositioned and secondary air intake. We will retain the most important specificities such as its unprecedented dimensions of 88 x 67.5 mm, liquid cooling, an anti-dribble clutch in oil bath, an interval extended to 30,000 terminals between the main revisions, and more power figures. plush while being just above reasonable. The 821 develops 110 hp at 9250 rpm, a jump of 15 hp compared to the 1100 HM. However, this peak is 1750 much higher. As could be expected from its displacement, the torque is not as consistent as on the 1100. With 9.1 mkg, its maximum value is between the 7.7 of the 796 and the 10.5 of the 1100. It is exactly right. necessary for energetic, muscular stimuli, and awakening the Traction Control.
A Ducati is a twin desmo, a trellis frame, and high-dose on-board electronics. The HM 821 is equipped accordingly. With the ride-by-wire (RbW) throttle grip, ride modes, 8-level traction control and 3-position ABS, silicon keeps things going. It is up to the pilot to configure the electronic crutches as they wish or simply choose one of the 3 modes with the settings that go well:
Sport : delivers a power of 110 hp, with a “High” RbW for maximum sensitivity at the throttle grip and reduced traction control.
Touring : 110 hp, with a “Medium” RbW, a traction control which intervenes more intrusive and an ABS at level 2 for a braking as stable as possible which also prevents the lifting of the rear wheel.
Urban : 75 hp, with a “Low” RbW, a DTC which intervenes more strongly and an ABS at level 2 for braking as stable as possible and also configured to avoid lifting of the rear wheel.
More compact, more visually worked, a bit more sassy, the Hypermotard knows how to renew itself while maintaining this silhouette that hits the mark. This generation, however, ignores the original mirrors at the end of the handlebars to hang them in a more classic way, and (a little) more efficient. Oops, the pots under the saddle are gone. Everyone will think what they want, but I very much appreciated these particularly vindictive sawn cannons in this fighting stance..
The frame, faithful to the scheme of the tubular steel trellis, is completely new. Its geometry is wiser than that of the old HM. The wheelbase goes from 1,455 mm to 1,500 mm, the caster angle opens from 24 ° to 25.5 ° and caster increases to 104 mm. The 821 should thus gain in stability. Ducati claims to have preserved the agility and maneuverability of its supermot ‘.
One detail will not have escaped you: the absence of steel tubes for the rear buckle. From now on, it is an aluminum structure which will support the crew and all the rear frame. The suspensions are more classic, but still with a tendency of efficiency: an inverted Kayaba fork of 43 mm and a Sachs shock absorber adjustable in rebound and preload. It is anchored on a new aluminum single-sided arm. Obviously, a lot of new parts on this Hypermotard.
We were talking about ABS. Let’s see who he’s frolicking with. A sporty toy, the Hypermotard 821 needs serious gear to slow down. Two 320 mm discs at the front, one of 245 at the rear, and above all Brembo M4-32 Monobloc radial front jaws. As it should be, the pump is also radial. We are just a step below hypersports ….
More powerful, more stable, barely heavier (175 kilos), the 821 Hypermotard promises a higher level of sensations. And longer! The tank goes to 16 liters, or 30% more capacity. From now on, the Hypermotard will be available with a single engine but several variations. A sharper version with sportier suspensions and electronics and lighter parts: the 821 SP. And a versatile access version: the Hyperstrada, with touring parts, a set of valos, 12 V sockets, etc….
