After inventing the trail supersport-GT, Ducati took advantage of 2013 to refine it. No shock or transition on the visual side, because the changes are so subtle that they seem invisible. Homeopathically revised front panel, LED lights, larger screen with push button adjustment, 1199 Panigale style rims… The builder runs on the detail.
The real changes are elsewhere. The Multistrada “evo” gains a new ABS and a revised engine while the anti-lock is entrusted to the 9ME system from Bosch. Using the same processor as that of the 1199 Panigale, ABS can be operated in 3 levels. The first is intended for the off-road, eliminates the anti-wheeling and allows the pilot to drive out of the rear under braking a brief moment before the ABS activates. The second plays on a front / rear balance without detection of lifting with the Sport mode. The third fully optimizes braking with anti-wheeling detection in Touring and Urban modes.
When it was released, the Multistrada immediately hit the headlines with its 150 horsepower. A super sporty engine in a trail and such power, it seemed (and still seems) largely unreasonable. In 2013, the Ducati MTS will have to rely on KTM’s 1190 Adventure, with the same ambitions. The Italian twin Testastretta can see it coming and has something to do with it. It takes advantage of 2013 to evolve with a double ignition (2 spark plugs per cylinder) and a number of improvements. A repositioning of the injectors, a secondary air intake system, a new material for the valve seats; here’s the gist. The result is an increase of torque of 0.7 mkg and more flexibility in the distribution of power. In addition, the interval between major overhauls increases to 24,000 kms.
The key points of the Multistrada are no longer to be recalled … Well, a little bit anyway. Its big engine, a multi-role chassis with the assistance of the 4 Riding Modes (Sport, Touring, Urban, Enduro), the ride-by-wire, the traction control, its character halfway between the trail-GT and sport … However, Ducati has kept a new advantage for the more upscale versions. The Multistrada S inaugurate the new semi-active Skyhook suspension. One more step towards electronic co-piloting, except that it would be more of a virtual technician in damping.
