Ducati was going through a serious financial crisis when it was acquired in 1985 by the Cagiva Group. With its legendary models, we had to admit that the brand that had made Desmo technology its own no longer had the capacity for innovation that had been its own..
The Pantah engine was promising, but its development was still very far from its potential.
As soon as it took control, the group decided to concentrate all efforts on this engine and to show the renewal of the brand, release an ambitious model. The project was easy for Cagiva. Indeed, the group had already thought about a project of big “Sport-Touring” on the basis of Ducati engine whose design of the cycle part had been proposed to Bimota. The project was considered too expensive and put aside (but will be taken over by Bimota under the name DB1)
In 1985, Massimo Tamburini (defector from Bimota) joined Cagiva, took over the project and created a tubular frame of square section with double cradle perfectly adapted to the Pantah engine..
The Paso was therefore released for the first time in 1986 with a 750cc engine. Paso’s name is a tribute to driver Renzo Pasolino, friend of Tamburini and tragically missing during a race on the Monza circuit.
The prototype shown to the public at the last motorcycle shows in 1985 is very popular with the public. The “full enclosed” style and rounded lines are almost unanimous and yet greatly surprise the regulars of the brand turned strongly towards pure and hard sports..
The finish is quite good, almost at the level of the Japanese but the bike is expensive and a little below its Japanese competitors in terms of power..
To remedy this, Ducati will move the Paso to the next level by offering it in 1988 a more modern 904cc engine. The bike is 20 kg heavier but gains 12 horsepower and torque, which make it a very good luxury sport road.
It will pass 907 then 907 IE according to developments and will inspire the release in the 90s of the Ducati ST range..
