Endurance test motorcycle KTM 1190 Adventure

Impressions from the non-tester

"Fuchsi, do you drive on the weekend? Tea endurance test KTM 1190 Adventure still needs four hundred and fifty kilometers. Please do not turn over six thousand. The first inspection is due on Monday." Sure, I will.

Two weeks ago I talked to Oberstabsfuhrwebel Froberg about the new endurance test GS for 1500 kilometers in the Dolomites and back, now he offers me it KTM 1190 Adventure. That calls for a mental comparison – which would be completely unfair; the general conditions are simply too different: Tiefenbronn, Hayingen and Stetten a. k. M., instead of Timmelsjoch, Hahntennjoch and Sellajoch.

It’s probably the same with the GS and the KTM 1190 Adventure as it is with Bavaria and Austria: The residents consider themselves to be the complete opposite of each other, but from a distance they are not that different. You have more often: people from Cologne and Dusseldorf, from Swabia and Baden, from Schleswig and Holstein. But it is clear that no one from the Palatinate lumps together with Saarlanders?!

The KTM 1190 Adventure waits without a suitcase and without a tank bag. Immediately, getting on also works more smoothly than with the GS. Only because? Barely. Is the bench perhaps lower? Not according to the data sheet. Or narrower? Certainly. Or is it because there is no boxer cylinder that restricts the space for my left foot? It doesn’t matter, I sit well and have a secure footing. The handlebars are comparatively narrow; that could be exhausting. He also wears a … huh … weird nuance in the crank. Either you get used to it, or you turn it a few degrees in the clamp.

Read? In addition: attentive and complete? Clear. But not now.

The KTM 1190 Adventure awaits the ignition key in a kind of depression between the fork bridge and the cockpit. Those with short fingers have to finger briefly until the key ignites. A trifle, why do I even notice? Did the GS experience make me whine? Few buttons on the dashboard, thanks to daytime running lights and automatic headlights, no separate switch for this, a kind of control pad on the left and a well-filled display.

"ATTENTION Read the entire operating instructions carefully before using the vehicle for the first time! ”Orders a sticker in a total of five languages. Mr. Sticker, you can read me carefully; nine semesters of minor computer science sit here. Operation manual? Pah! Set the chassis of the KTM 1190 Adventure to one-person-without-luggage mode, the damping remains on "Street".

But strange: Computer keyboards are getting more and more additional buttons so that you can easily access frequently used functions of the PC. Motorcycles are getting more and more functions in the on-board computer, but fewer and fewer buttons on the dashboard. The KTM 1190 Adventure is no exception, even the trivial task of “setting back daily kilometers” is hidden in one of the menu levels. Fortunately, pretty high up. Sponge over it, departure – engine, please report!

The engine of the KTM 1190 Adventure

The V2 of the KTM 1190 Adventure is ready to go: "I’m awake and ready at all times! Do we drive without equal? Japrimalassunslos driving! Bind on the spot! Highway mischief super class super class super!" Gosh, what a hectic. I need something like a sore throat. Even more in the evening rush hour. No, boy, first of all you shouldn’t turn too high anyway, and secondly, for our first few meters, you behave a little calmer. Where is the rain mapping hidden? Ah, here.

Get out of the city basin! Which frostbite activated the seat heating in August? Nobody, that comes from the engine alone. Great. Park the KTM 1190 Adventure at home first, rather try everything out in peace and quiet tomorrow.

Saturday welcomes the KTM 1190 Adventure with 20 degrees Celsius and a dry B 27. Somehow the rain mapping is a bit very defensive – back to the street vote. And the KTM 1190 Adventure is already behaving like a track and field athlete who’s finally got the Theraband off their ankles. Below 3000 rpm a bit rough, but from then on up to 6000 really robust. In this speed window – better: in this speed chart – the next few hours will take place. According to the speedometer, the first gear goes up to 50 km / h, the second up to 70, the third up to 90. I recognize a pattern. Fourth to 110, fifth to 130, sixth to – uh! – 160.

KTM-LCD: Everything is so beautifully monochrome here!

The KTM 1190 Adventure is very precise when it comes to speed; the LCD digits fidget wildly in the service of precision. I don’t really care if I’m 98 or 103 km / h fast. Cheers to analog clocks! They are more expensive and more vulnerable, need more space and only have one function. But they look better and don’t spread that kind of actionism. The tachometer works too!

In the LCD box to the left, the KTM 1190 Adventure displays “Favorites”, which should be my five favorite pieces of information: STREET mode, ABS on, air temp 24.4 ° C, ODO 693 km, trip 1 131.3 km.

ODO is the total odometer that I am supposed to bring to 1000 on the KTM 1190 Adventure. Why actually "ODO"? Sure, from Odometer – but why is it called that in English? Sounds more like an odor measuring device. Is ODO an acronym? For "Overall Distance O … – anything?" If you know, you can sit back with a smart grin; I checked. The ancient Greeks are to blame: "hodós" – the way; "Metron" – the measure. Quite unspectacular.

KTM 1190 Adventure – the driving experience

This is what it looks like when a professional rider and a professional photographer put the KTM 1190 Adventure through its paces.

Enough of the display, important is on the road. I hate to admit it, but the KTM 1190 Adventure is a hot piece. Worse still: I like that. Because of "Orange only carries the garbage collection". What sounds unnecessarily hectic when idling in the underground car park compared to, say, a two-cylinder boxer engine, develops a blazing sound fire when accelerating. The boxer soon turns into a sonically moderate snarling, the V2 of the KTM 1190 Adventure screams for more. But I’m only allowed to shoot up to 6000!

I’ve long since got used to the nuance of the handlebar cranking, and the turning forces aren’t worth mentioning. I have no idea why you would want a longer lever. In fast corners (or what I call it), the KTM 1190 Adventure doesn’t seem as consistently nailed to the track as its white and blue genre sister, but it’s far from imprecise or rocky.

These four buttons operate the on-board menu: switch up and down between the entries, go one level down on the right, one up on the left – very easy.

When refueling after 285 kilometers, almost 16 liters of super flow into the tank of the KTM 1190 Adventure – making 5.6 liters per 100 run-in kilometers. According to the data sheet, 23 liters fit into the tank, which is theoretically good for 410 kilometers. In practice: There aren’t that many petrol stations on the Swabian Alb, so it’s better to refuel earlier.

After pressing around on the control pad of the KTM 1190 Adventure, my left thumb told the favorites display that I can adequately assess the outside temperature myself and that I would prefer to have a remaining range display from now on.

You can also choose from: ØSpeed1, ØVerbr1, Fahrzeit1, MTC (traction control), damping, VR, HR (tire pressure front and rear), battery and heated grips. Heated grips? Well, for me. But not today. As we are just pressing a button: Just for fun, I set the shift light to 6000 rpm, with an advance warning at 5500.

KTM 1190 Adventure – or rather GS?

Herr Oberstabsfuhrwebel Froberg – is this a precision landing or is it a precision landing?

Fill up the bike, clean it and give it back. The question of conscience awaits: KTM 1190 Adventure or GS? The MOTORRAD 1000-point evaluation voted 21 points ahead of BMW (see enduro comparison test in MOTORRAD 7/2013); personally i’m not so sure.

Imagine you are facing two bad boys in a dark alley. Would you rather have Terence Hill or Bud Spencer by your side to support you? “It depends,” you answer – and rightly so. As a relaxed, confident touring motorcycle, the GS is probably the better choice for me than the KTM 1190 Adventure as a fun-on-Saturday plane. But I also find both extremely strong in the other discipline.

A few questions remain: What happens between 6000 rpm and the end of the rev counter at 12000 rpm? How does that sound How much stuff fits in the suitcase of the KTM 1190 Adventure? How does it drive then? And do the struts vibrate just to the left and right of the passenger seat strong enough to alleviate cellulite? Oberstabsfuhrwebel Froberg, I have to go out again when the opportunity arises. With a KTM 1190 Adventure without a speed limit. You’re welcome!
