Johann Zarco regrets his lack of aggression at the end of the European GP
Johann Zarco, who started from a splendid 4th place in the European GP, finally finished this antepenultimate 2020 MotoGP race in ninth position after a few mistakes during the last two laps… MNC declaration and analysis.
Johann Zarco, Ducati-Avintia (4th in qualifying and 9th in race) : "I’m very happy with my solid start to the race and my pace. It’s very positive because we didn’t do a lot of laps on the dry track. Unfortunately, I made a few small mistakes at the end of the race which Made me lose positions: I could have kept seventh by fighting more. The best is yet to come! "

MNC analysis : "Zarco-corico" for Johann who once again stood out on his private Ducati during the Valencia GP, especially on the dry Saturday. The Cannes driver is a hair’s breadth away from the top position, as he qualified 4th just one tenth behind "Pole" Espargaro on his factory KTM !
This major performance encourages him to nurture great ambitions, also driven by the unexpected outbursts of this surprising 2020 season: "the biggest surprise was the victory of Binder (in the Czech Republic, Editor’s note), so I tell me why not me? ", he caught himself dreaming on Saturday night….
Rather well off as soon as the lights went out, Johann however quickly realized – like everyone else – that victory would be played between a Suzuki and a GSX-RR, or between Alex Rins and Joan Mir who finally won his first success in the premier class after an astonishing error in reporting from his (nice?) teammate.
Without being able to play for the win, the n ° 5 remained at the gates of the Top 5 for a long time with the satisfaction of being once again the best Ducati representative, as in the previous race in Aragon (Spain). Promising for 2021 when it will have a GP20 at Pramac !
Slack at the end of the race…
But a small drop in speed during the last part of the race will cost him three positions: "I was tired at the end of the race because I had to constantly attack, especially under braking, to recover my deficit when exiting the curve. I was missing two tenths per lap, "he explains..
Jack Miller will take the opportunity to overtake him, followed by Andrea Dovizioso to whom Johann has clearly not shown much resistance: "I thought it might be better to stay behind him for the championship", admits the ‘former KTM rider still scarred for having inadvertently dropped "Dovi" at the Catalan GP…
Andrea Dovizioso, sixth in the provisional 45 points behind the leader, also admits no longer entertaining any illusions for the title but would not "spit" (sic!) On "a second or third" place in the final standings. Especially since it could be his last year in MotoGP since the Italian – starting from Ducati – would plan to retrain in motocross !
"I still have the passion, but at the base the pilots do not dream of becoming testers", he explains while his alternatives are reduced to recovering Aprilia de Iannone if this money remains suspended for doping in 2021, or become a development pilot for the same brand or its competitors Yamaha and Honda. An unattractive option for the n ° 4 obviously, unlike the MX which he particularly likes !
But back to Johann Zarco: his decline continued when Brad Binder passed him during his spectacular comeback after his "long lap" penalty. "I could have kept 7th position with a more offensive strategy", regrets the Avinitia rider who set off on hard and medium tires and not on soft as was indicated by mistake at the start..
Johann’s teammate, Spaniard Esteve “Tito” Rabat, was also notified this weekend of his dismissal from the Ducati-Avinitia team: Valentino Rossi’s half-brother will start in MotoGP alongside his current rival Moto2 , Enea Bastianini.
