Followed up: Honda Pan European
Shuttle service
The latest model of the Honda Pan European shows weaknesses in driving stability. A second retrofit campaign is to turn the previous commuter train into a stable Intercity. MOTORRAD checked it out.
When it was presented in April 2002, the Pan European attracted attention with its tendency to swing at speeds over 160 km / h. After several owners of this model complained about the driving behavior, there was a recall campaign in which all screw connections on the engine and chassis were meticulously adjusted. However, the desired effect did not materialize, which is why a major conversion campaign started in the spring of 2003 and Honda ordered a delivery stop for new machines.
The second improvement included new engine mounts, new bolts for the swing arm mounting and other parts. MOTORRAD was able to check the current status of the measures on the basis of such a converted machine from the customer. However, the result of the driving tests was not very convincing. At 160 km / h the motorcycle began to commute unchanged, both with the windshield lowered and, to a greater extent, with the windshield raised. Over 200 km / h, the commuting increased again significantly, but still not to a dangerous extent. The whole thing became critical when releasing the accelerator from high speeds or when braking hard. Then the Pan European rocked alarmingly and only calmed down
below speed 160 again.
On the other hand, a test motorcycle from Honda showed decent handling with the disc in the lowest position. Only bumps caused the chassis to riot at higher speeds. With the disc up, this specimen also experienced a slight oscillation at speeds of over 160 km / h, which increased when the accelerator was released and became uncomfortable when braking. When the suitcases were loaded, the instability increased even further, but Pan European reacted to two-person operation
wless critical.
Honda has not achieved the goal it has declared to MOTORRAD to bring all Pan Europeans to a level that is rated at least 16 out of 30 points in the 1000-point ranking in the straight-line stability discipline. While the Honda test motorcycle would have jumped this hurdle with 18 points, the customer motorcycle would clearly have failed. Obviously, the remedial measures work very differently, tolerances play a major role. A fact that sparked the desire for change among some customers, which Honda has complied with in several cases.
