Harley-Davidson in the 2020 model year

New bikes, technologies and paintwork

Harley-Davidson is always good for headlines. The US company unveiled two unusual models at EICMA. Electric LiveWire is also a bold move, and global politics also play a role in Milwaukee.

GAnze 100 new models had announced Harley in 2017 for the next ten years and is slowly getting serious: With the Streetfighter Bronx and especially the travel enduro Pan America, both of which are due to arrive at the end of 2020, Harley is leaning far out of the window: Both are bikes according to Harley specially tailored for the European market. It remains to be seen whether their design will also meet European tastes.

Harley does not pass punitive tariffs on to customers

Harley has also ventured far with LiveWire and is the first large-scale motorcycle manufacturer to offer a purely electrically powered motorcycle. It is remarkable that this courageous move comes from a corporation that was previously considered to be very traditional, if not to say conservative. It is also remarkable that Harley remains true to its motto issued in 2018 and does not pass on the punitive tariffs imposed by the EU to customers. In response to increased US import duties on products from Europe, the EU has increased import duties on Harleys from six to 31 percent – which means that every Harley should have been more expensive, on average, by approximately 2,000 euros, but it never did.

Communication system H-D Connect

H-D Connect communication system: With the help of a smartphone app, information about the vehicle can be called up on the mobile device. In addition to information on the vehicle status (e.g. display of the remaining range, battery charge status, other statistics), the system can also be used to monitor your own bike remotely. If the bike starts moving involuntarily, the owner will receive a notification. With some equipment variants, the tire pressure can also be displayed via the app. With LiveWire, owners can also search for the nearest charging station and navigate to it. During the charging process, the remaining charging time is shown in the app. Necessary maintenance and inspections should be remembered more easily thanks to the new system. H-D Connect is only available for selected models. The new system is standard on most 2020 touring models (except for the Electra Glide Standard and Road King models), CVO models and LiveWire.

Like some other bikes, the new LiveWire will benefit from the new communication system.

Reflex Defensive Rider Systems

In addition to the H-D Connect communication system, a new assistance system package called Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) will be launched in the 2020 model year. The new system is supposed to adjust the acceleration and deceleration forces while driving, if necessary. The new assistance package includes an electronic combined braking system with cornering ABS, cornering traction control, cornering / traction control, a vehicle stop assistant and a tire pressure monitoring system. With a few exceptions that Harley has not yet mentioned, RDRS is only available as a complete package. The new assistance system package comes as standard with the LiveWire, the trikes, the CVO models and the touring models Road King Special, Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special, Ultra Limited and Road Glide Limited.

Low Rider S and Tri Glide are new

There is also a lot going on with the bikes themselves in the 2020 model year. The Softail family is growing: The Harley-Davidson Low Rider S is new. According to Harley, the new model wants to combine agile handling, power and style. The Low Rider S is powered by the Milwaukee Eight 114 engine, which develops 94 hp at 5020 rpm. In Germany, the new model is available from 19,795 euros (plus transport and assembly flat rate).

Another new addition is the Trike CVO Tri Glide. Harley donated the Milwaukee Eight 117 engine to the new trike model, which developed 109 hp at 5,450 rpm. Cost: 53,495 euros (plus transport and set-up fee).

The Low Rider S is the newest member of the Softail family.

The new Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited will replace the Road Glide Ultra in the coming model year. In addition to new design elements and a new paint job, Harley has given the Tourer heated handlebar grips and Slicer II light alloy wheels. New in 2020 is also the Black Finish color variant, which is intended to give the Ultra Limited and Road Glide Limited models a darker look.
