Driving report: Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade
Honda’s 2012 super sports car
The new Honda Fireblade can be recognized from the outside by its fairing, pointed wings and sharp lines. MOTORRAD also gained first impressions of the inner values.
A longer and angular front fairing replaces the short round nose on the 2012 model, which has featured on the Fireblade since 2008 (type code SC59). This means that a controversially discussed feature of the Honda sportswoman and unfortunately also a piece of uniqueness disappears. Nevertheless, those who know the previous SC59 will find their way around the new one blindfolded.
Even without motorcycle contact, he can tell by the engine sound which machine he is looking at, because the engine has been taken over unchanged. Okay, there is now a gear sensor that not only writes the correct number in the gear display of the new information center, but also forms the basis for different performance characteristics in the individual gears. Regardless of this, a revised map should ensure smoother load changes and linear power development at lower speeds at all throttle valve angles. The well-known 4000 torque hole has been filled, say Honda engineers.
W.he hole cannot be felt during the first cautious laps on the still cold asphalt of the Algarve race course near Portimão. But the tester is not entirely sure of this statement, because with every lap the fantastic route makes new demands, demands a precise line, precisely set braking points, lower gears and higher speeds for the inclines. But above all for the long and wide last right-hand bend and the subsequent home straight. 4000 rpm? After the warm-up phase, we lower ourselves to this level only shortly before stopping. But the load changes actually take place very gently.

Honda
Honda Fireblade: The new wheels are based on the Marchesini models from Italy.
The braking itself is not critical at this point, because the motorcycle is almost automatically decelerated and steered in from the steep uphill stretch with an elevated entrance. A few hundred meters, a hilltop and a descent later, after the next steep uphill section, there is a more difficult test. Especially for the electronics of the Combined ABS, which fortunately will be standard equipment in Germany at the price of last year’s ABS-free model. It starts its work with a short pulse on the rear brake, which promotes stability. Unless the rear wheel is somewhat relieved of a nearly hop over a hilltop, as happens here. Nevertheless, the rear of the blade only dances slightly out of track when braking sharply into an equally sharp right-hand bend, and the anti-lock function reacts quickly enough.
At the end of the home straight, you have to brake from over 270 km / h mostly on a sloping section; However, since the braking point is still in front of the slope, the combination brake provides the reassuring feeling that the rear wheel is literally being pulled onto the track. In short: In a situation in which the combined ABS has a rather disadvantageous effect, you can still live with it, but with all other braking maneuvers it has massive advantages. It even cleanses out an incipient high-spirited stop in the downhill braking zone.
As it should be, the row of LEDs in the new display instrument guides the driver up to the gearshift speed without the driver having to look. No attention is distracted from the route. Unfortunately, this commendable circumstance also means that the tester paid little attention to the other display options. A detailed test must clarify how the instrument proves itself in everyday life and other things. Coming soon in MOTORCYCLE.
