Honda CBR 650 R in the driving report

Like a shrunken Fireblade

The new Honda CBR 650 R replaces the well-known CBR 650 F. Styled like a small Fireblade, it should cause unrest in the middle class. How is she doing on the first trip in Mojacar, Spain?

W.he CB 650 F and CBR 650 F already shared the technology, so their successors now also share the hardware. Accordingly, the R version also has an improved chassis and more power. The similarity to the large Fireblade results from the new 15.4 liter tank and the new wedge-shaped full fairing including the new double headlights, which, like all other lights, use LED technology. The seating position became sportier with stumps mounted under the upper triple clamp. The seat height is still 810 mm. The new LCD instrument display in the cockpit is also upgraded with a gear display and a gearshift indicator.

Looks borrowed from the Fireblade

Changes to the frame and tank as well as the revised footrests save 6 kilograms in weight. With a full tank, the CBR 650 R takes 207 kilograms to the start. A 41 mm Showa SFF USD fork, radially mounted four-piston brake calipers and floating 310 mm brake discs as well as a 240 mm disc with single-piston caliper at the rear complete the equipment of the CBR 650 R. The cast rims, the dimensions of the tires, have also been redesigned Wear 120/70 ZR17 and 180/55 ZR17.

Honda

The headlights in particular are reminiscent of the sporty top model.

The 649 cm³ four-cylinder is now allowed to turn 1,000 rpm higher (up to 12,000 tours) and has been modified in the inlet and outlet areas and increased in compression. In total, the modifications should bring an output of 95 hp and 64 Nm to the test bench. A 48 hp variant is also available. Other features include ABS, of course, as well as a new anti-hopping clutch and adjustable traction control. The new Honda CBR 650 R will be available in the two colors Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic and Grand Prix Red. Honda has not yet announced prices or a market launch date.

First outing with the new Honda CBR 650 R.

The new Honda CBR 650 R has a lot in common with its bare sister model, the CB 650 R. In terms of engine power, traction control, anti-hopping clutch, weight savings of six kilograms each compared to its predecessor, the brakes and the 41 Upside-Upside -down fork from Showa, the two bikes are no different. So what are the differences apart from the disguise??

Honda

Compared to the CB 650 R, the clad CBR is slightly more expensive at 9,290.

At 9,290 euros including ancillary costs, the Honda CBR 650 R costs more, but there is really sharp racing design. The Fireblade was the inspiration for the design of the fairing, which is why the new CBR is now much more aggressive on its wheels, becoming a blade for sport bike beginners in the middle class. For this, the thumb can point upwards. In order to increase the racing spirit even further, Honda has also made the seating position of the CBR 650 R a little more radical. The position of the footrests changes as with the CB 650 R, but the clip-on handlebars now attached under the upper triple clamp are 30 millimeters lower and further forward than on the previous CBR. This ensures a more front-wheel-heavy integration of the driver, but is still very comfortable for an athlete. The seating position and the choice of tires with Dunlops D 214 rob the CBR 650 R a little of the playful handiness that the naked sister has, but the athlete is a bit more comfortable on the road and scores with a touch more stability.

Successful model update

In this case, what you prefer is a matter of taste, but this essence goes well with the CBR. Because: despite this, it is still far from unwieldy. And even if the engine (same power and tuning) comes to the fore at higher speeds with vibration, which could not be felt in the CB 650 R, the squeezing of the four on the athlete is a little more cheerful. Since otherwise a lot is the same between the two bikes, both remain a good choice for fans of high-revving four-cylinder engines. As a resume, it remains to be stated: The “R” stands for an e-R successful model update on both the CB 650 R and the CBR 650 R. OK then.
