Driving report: Honda Crosstourer
The new tourer from Honda
Elliptical trainer, crossover, crossrunner – not all that one "Cross" leads in the name inevitably has something to do with off-road sports. Honda’s new Crosstourer is also more at home on the road than off the road.
If there was a motorcycle class named after a single model (corresponding to the “Golf class” for cars), it would be this one. The big travel enduros would become the “GS class” because, like the VW Golf, the Munich-based company dominated an entire guild for years. So who’s new about Honda’s C.rosstourer writes, inevitably has to write about the GS – and its ongoing success. In Germany, 6123 GS were sold last year, which is of course number one on the approval charts. The direct competition, the Yamaha XT 1200 Z, had just 984 units. In a growing segment, mind you, which has posted double-digit growth over the past two years. No wonder that Honda would also like to cut a good piece of this pie. This year they want to sell 1500 pieces.

But what about the landing gear side? The high weight was already an issue, a relatively high focus can hardly be avoided with this vehicle concept. Fortunately, this does not have as much impact on handling as feared at first. On the contrary: once the fat man is on the move, a lot goes by itself. The narrow-tyred crosstourer swings easily and neutrally from one lean angle to the other, steers precisely and precisely follows the line. The coordination of suspension and damping on the robust side is at home without becoming uncomfortable. The Kayaba spring elements swallow waves and rough bumps cleanly, while heels and transverse grooves let the 43-millimeter upside-down fork trample.
The semi-integral brake system (of course with ABS) delays the load sustainably when the hand and foot lever is activated, the traction control regulates sensitively if necessary and can be switched off on gravel passages. In addition, the range of accessories not only includes fiddly heated grips (274 euros) and a higher pane (159 euros), but also two case systems, because Honda Germany not only has the very expensive original cases (with top case 1780 euros) but also a cheaper system from sw motec will offer. That’s right, because after all, 13 490 (14 490 Euro DCT version) are no cheap pleasure even without a luggage system.
