Honda NC 700 X 2014

With the arrival of the 750 version, one would think that the NC 700 X (and its sister S) would be shelved to leave the field open to its most punchy sister. Well no, the two coexisted in 2014. More exactly, only the version with the DCT double clutch robotized gearbox remains in the catalog.. The young permits will thus have something to eat.

Since the appearance of the VFR 800 X in 2011, Honda has discovered a passion for this new concept: motorcycles in the cross-over category – like in cars: machines that look like 4x4s but stay in town . The NC 700 X is one of the children of this ideology halfway between fun and hypocrisy.
It was the smallest, the cheapest, and certainly not the least interesting of the three X brothers. But with the arrival of the CB 500 X, the NC finds itself with its bottom between two chairs. Complementary or competitor of the CB, what about ?

Completely the opposite of a powerful, traveler, and imposing Crosstourer, the NC-X is the backpacker of cities. Seeing it, hard to believe that it is the S roadster simply better dressed and enhanced on its suspensions. Its skin, strongly modeled on that of the Crossrunner, gives it much more style than the basic NC 700 S. A larger windshield and more muscular shoulders will also give it a little more protection. But under the plastic, it’s kif-kif: same chassis, same engine, same technical solutions.
The manufacturer thus offered him a classic but sufficient ‘diamond’ frame in steel tubes. At the front, a single disc takes care of the braking (adequate for performance, but surprising for a machine of this size and this displacement), and supported by the C-ABS fitted as standard – an anti-lock doubled ” a system that activates the front brake when the rear is requested.
Important point, and strong point: the engine block is strongly tilted forward. Not only does this lower the center of gravity, promote agility, but it frees up space in the frame. Instead of the tank (the real one is under the saddle), there is a trunk that can accommodate a full face helmet. A great trick, already used in the Aprilia 850 Mana, also equipped with an auto gearbox.
New, the dashboard is entirely digital, displaying speed, two trips, clock, and in bar graph form, engine speed and fuel gauge. The bike is also equipped with the HISS immobilizer, an engine guard, petal brake discs, and a weight of 228 kilos. We’ll come to that later.
With suspensions offering a travel of 153.5 mm at the front and 150 at the rear, the NC cross can afford an escapade on slightly stony paths, thus justifying its name. It thus takes up certain advantages of the trail, such as an upright driving position and a smile when approaching dirt and dust. Nothing to show off in front of a Katoche EXC, just enough to visit a stretch of road on which the NC-S could not venture. In short, the same leitmotif as the Crossrunner facing the VFR 800.

Honda NC 700 X 2014

The creation of the twin was dictated by these imperatives: savings and sobriety are at the forefront. We don’t rush out of town, with almost 52 horsepower. An easily deflated value at 47.5 hp / 35 KW, which is exactly the limit imposed by the future A2 license. The NC 700 is not only a measured power for new bikers but also already ready for the new European regulations. It will not be insipid however: the watts peak at a very reasonable speed of 6,250 rpm, and the maximum torque is reached before 5,000 rpm. No need to make the mill howl to get the most out of it. The 270 ° setting will bring a little character to the whole.
Technically, it was thought to do well and here possible several choices at the same time, always in order to avoid any waste of energy. The cylinder head contains only one camshaft, which takes care not only of the valve dance but also of the driving of the water pump. Double function also for the balance shaft, reducing vibrations on the one hand, and taking care of the oil pump on the other hand. The number of parts is also limited: a single injector, a single outlet at the end of the cylinder head for the exhaust gases, which will only travel about ten centimeters before reaching the catalyst. Placed so close, it rises faster in temperature in order to be quickly effective.
This block, it competes in sobriety. Honda announces 3.6 liters per 100. Incredible! The consumption of a 125. With its 14 liter tank, you are ready for 400 road terminals. But let’s put things into perspective: these figures are obtained with the double clutch version, and in D mode, as sporty as a Homer Simpson.

Double clutch? You mean… ..? That yes, the NC 700 is equipped with a robotic double clutch gearbox, as on the VFR 1200 and the Crosstourer. The perfect co-pilot for getting around town, with the choice of an all-car gearbox, with a sport or quiet driving mode, and an impulse mode where the pilot switches gears with a flick of a button. The double clutch, one controlling the even gears and the other the odd gears, allows an ultra fast and super smooth selection.

More versatile, more lively, endowed with much more charisma than the S version, the NC 700 X plays the crossover. A real little all-purpose machine with an economic vocation but whose ramage somewhat weighs down the wallet. With ABS and DCT as standard, the tech baggage is provided, but clearly Indiana’s jacket and Jones’ boots aren’t cheap.
