Honda SH 300i ABS test
The sleeper
The Honda SH 300i is hidden under an inconspicuous body. With 16-inch wheels, a narrow fairing and a tall stature, it is a typical large-wheel scooter.
Helmfach and footwell are tight. The upright, comfortable sitting position compensates for this.
The surprise follows the first time you turn the throttle. The 27 hp engine with water cooling, four valves, injection and G-Kat is extremely willing to work on the gas, pulls evenly and powerfully – so much spontaneously available power, such a smooth running is otherwise not known from the rather jerky single-cylinder scooter. The reason: The newly designed single carries its oil supply outside the closed crankcase with a pressure relief valve. According to Honda, this avoids pumping and splashing losses. In addition, the crankshaft with plain bearings reduces noise, vibrations and internal friction. The result of the effort is excellent acceleration, quiet and smooth running and consumption of around four liters.
On winding country roads as well as in the urban turmoil, the SH 300i driver benefits from a great overview and the easy and precise handling of the Honda. Hardly any other scooter outside of the 125 class, with the possible exception of the Aprilia Sportcity 250, is so playful and precise, and at the same time springs so comfortably. This could have something to do with the complex mounting of the drive unit swing arm, which Honda describes as “floating” – it is supposed to decouple vibrations and shocks without impairing the precision of the wheel guidance. ABS and composite brakes are a big plus. The powerful stoppers are easy to dose, the ABS regulates very gently. Otherwise, the operation of the SH does not pose any problems. The helmet compartment opens with the ignition lock, the topcase’s locking mechanism works better than on the SH 125i and CBF 1000. The workmanship is neat, the equipment with main and side stand, clock and double trip meter in the spacious cockpit is appropriate for the price of 5190 euros.
