Honda Transalp model overview and used advice
All transalp types
In its 26-year construction period, the Transalp has never participated in the arms race for top performance, but it has always been characterized by its versatility. That was apparently appreciated, because the model was sold over 37,000 times in Germany. An overview of all types.
PD06 (1987-1993)
TDespite all skepticism about the frame-mounted fairing, the 190 kilo XL 600 V Transalp, with its square tubular steel frame stable enough for off-road use, quickly gained a good reputation as a multi-function motorcycle that is fully travel-friendly and also suitable for motorways, described by the term “rally touring” Side covers below the model name. The Honda logo is emblazoned on the tank panel. The concept of the liquid-cooled 52-degree V2 engine (in Germany: 50 instead of 55 hp) with an overhead camshaft (ohc) each comes from the road machine VT 500. In Germany, 1149 pieces of the PD06 of the first year of construction were sold for 8,300 marks, from the 1988 model (also in the color “Nancy-Beige”) 1105 pieces. In 1989 the colors and decor changed (“Transalp” lettering now dominant). Valves, springs and rocker arms have been adopted from the XRV 650 Africa Twin, the transmission has been refined and the rear suspension has been improved. New: angular instrument panel and a windscreen that is six centimeters higher. In addition, a main stand can now be mounted. Between 1989 and 1993, 9,123 units were sold in Germany.

Honda Transalp model overview and used advice
All transalp types
PD06 / 10 (1994-1999)
The Transalp is getting a new look with sleeker, flush-mounted headlights and a modified front mask as well as side ventilation channels. Further modifications: adjustable handbrake lever, wider hand protectors, cast aluminum luggage rack with luggage hook. Meanwhile on offer for over 12,000 marks, the Facelift PD06 sold 4470 times in the first year, together with the machine, which was manufactured at the Italian Honda factory in Atessa from 1997, a total of 13,872 pieces in Germany – a bestseller. From 1996 (last year of manufacture in Japan, already with silver rims and 120 mm rear tires) the Transalp was given a digital transistor ignition – previously the CDI unit, which was unfortunately placed under the seat, was a typical weak point. The weight increases to 205 kilos with a full tank, the gear ratio is revised. The model code PD10 has been in effect since production in Italy. In 1997 the motorcycle was equipped with a double disc brake system with double piston calipers. The Italy PD10 has quality problems with paint, wheels and electrics. In 1999 a “50th Anniversary” model is offered in the paintwork of the first PD06 from 1987.
Market situation
Many fans consider the last Transalps still produced in Japan to be the best, as they are considered the most technically mature and solid within the PD06 type family. In top condition with less than 50,000 kilometers, they sometimes cost just under 3,000 euros despite their impressive age. The PD10, which was manufactured in Italy from 1996 onwards, is said to have corrosion problems and processing flaws, which in reality often turn out to be minor details. Tip for bargain hunters: Look for around 1500 euros, from Bj. ’97 (with double disc brakes) in good condition.
RD10 / 11 (2000-2007)
After 13 years on the market, Honda presents the Transalp completely overhauled. A completely new design with many detail changes and a 55 hp 650 V2 with new, more coarsely ribbed cylinders are intended to ensure a more modern image of the middle grader. An enlarged air filter box is now located directly above the carburettors on the stiffened frame. Honda no longer speaks of “Rally Touring” as the main theme, but of “Sophisticated Adventure”. The exhaust is equipped with an unregulated catalytic converter, and a secondary air system should also minimize pollutants. The seat height drops by 10 mm, the handlebar is 10 mm narrower. Larger chassis modifications: including damping of the telescopic fork and rear shock absorber with expansion tank and adjustable pressure stage. Other changes to the RD10: new instrument panel, immobilizer, new indicators and new taillight. Tank now with 19 instead of 18 liters. From 2002 Honda moves production to the factory in Spain, from then on model code RD11. From year of construction 2005: tinted windshield, clear glass indicators, new stainless steel twin tailpipes for exhaust, black anodized rims. Price: a good 7,000 euros.
Market situation
Good used ones of the first 650s (RD10) can be found for less than 2000 euros, but with more than 50,000 kilometers. Since RD11s with less than 30,000 kilometers can be easily identified on the watch in the relatively large range, it is worthwhile for those interested in a more detailed comparison of additional accessories, maintenance history and general maintenance status. From 3500 euros, those who love to travel can find freshly tuned used machines with suitcases and less than 20,000 kilometers from first hand as well as very decent dealer offers.
RD13 / 15 (2008-2012)
A new motorcycle – only name now: Transalp. Manufacturing in Spain. New engine with injection instead of carburetors, identical to the V2 of the mid-range touring machine Honda Deauville. New motto for the RD13: “Adventure Sports Style”. From now on, the Transalp will be equipped with a 19-inch front wheel for better asphalt handling at the expense of off-road capabilities. The new 700 (680 cm³ displacement) with now four instead of three valves per cylinder and double cam control is optionally available for 7690 euros with ABS in connection with a CBS composite brake and a lower seat height. With the exception of a wheelbase longer by 10 mm, the chassis is largely based on that of the previous model. Outwardly, the 700 series differs considerably: new front fairing with multiflexible single headlights, smaller tank, new cockpit with digital speedometer and fuel gauge, new engine protection. Weight (with ABS): over 220 kilos. From 2010 the Transalp, the last of the model series to date, will be built in Italy again and will run as the RD15. ABS has been standard since 2011 and the shock absorber has been modified. Sales price of the last year of construction 2012: 8390 euros.
Market situation
For hardly driven copies of the last years of construction sometimes 6000 euros and more are required. Difficult. Realistic maximum prices for the not particularly popular 700 series Transalp, which is somewhat detached from newer used competitors such as Kawasaki Versys, Suzuki V-Strom 650 or Yamaha Tracer 700, are 5000 euros. If with less than 20,000 kilometers on offer. An RD13 starts at 3500 euros, but then with a good 30,000 kilometers. Still, good value for a reliable, foolproof, fuel injected travel machine.
