Honda VFR 800 F in the PS driving report
The best VFR ever?
Content of
The design of the new Honda VFR 800 F is definitely reminiscent of past decades. Hopefully the touring athlete doesn’t ride like that too! PS found that out.
There you stand in front of the new Honda VFR 800 F and experience has already seen. As with the old models up to 2001, the silencer is positioned at the bottom right again, and the cladding with the headlight looks just as brawny as that of the first 800 model from 1998. Nothing looks daring or even aggressive. “Everything revolves around history,” says project manager Masatsuga Tanaka when asked. He could also say: VFR customers are fundamentally conservative. That’s why people prefer to serve roast pork with sauce instead of monkey brain on ice.

The best VFR ever?
The touring athlete’s seating position is now a little more touring than sport
Spain in April. Lots of sun over a desert-like expanse that is cut through by grandiose curves with gourmet topping. As a journalist, you can unwind the first 200 kilometers here. But what is it? The touring athlete’s seating position is now a bit more touring than sport, because the handlebars are slightly higher and are slightly closer to the driver. If you like it even more touristy, you can increase this effect with an adapter plate (accessory). No question about it, the Honda VFR 800 F is not world-shattering different from its predecessors. It is very stable, is not a handling miracle, but can be steered precisely.
The propagated weight saving of ten kilos cannot easily be determined while driving. The aluminum bridge frame was taken over unchanged from the previous model, a modified rear frame made of cast aluminum should save three kilos compared to the previous model. The new four-in-one exhaust system alone is certified as seven kilos. In addition, this moved back down with a favorable focus. What really brings something, however, is the new braking system. It shines with a good effect as well as a defined pressure point and good controllability. The Honda VFR 800 F rolling on a Dunlop Sportmax 222 can also be precisely steered on the brakes and smoothly shot through the radii.

The performance of the V4 drive has decreased compared to the previous model
When it comes to shooting, we’re right at the engine. The performance of the V4 drive of the Honda VFR 800 F has decreased compared to the previous model! Instead of 109 hp at 10,500 rpm, Honda specifies 106 hp at 10,250 rpm for the 2014 model. That is bitter. Now for the good news: The peculiarities of the VTEC system criticized by many are a thing of the past. The patented valve control system, in which only two valves per cylinder operate up to around 7000 rpm and four valves per cylinder above that, now works smoothly and flawlessly. The V4 dashes through the rev range as smooth as silk.
To put it badly: You hardly notice that it is on board. Only at around 7000 rpm does the sound of the valve train change, the snarling becomes more nervous and the drive tenses its muscles a little more. Unfortunately only a little. You shouldn’t expect great deeds with 106 hp and 239 kilos with a full tank, especially when you compare these values with those of the competition: A Kawasaki Z 1000 SX, for example, leaves a stronger impression with its 142 hp at 231 kilos. Still, the new Honda VFR 800 F is perhaps the best in its entire history.

Conclusion
Honda
With the new model one would like to lure new customers among other things.
The Honda VFR 800 F is a good, very high-quality touring athlete. Instead of self-resetting turn signals, standard heated grips and variable seat height, we would have preferred more smoke and perhaps a shovel more displacement. The weight reduction is hardly noticeable. Only those who do not value high performance and like a moderate V4 can be happy with the new VFR.
