Honda CBR 600 F 1989

For 2 years, the CBR 600 can boast not only of being an astonishing success (especially in our country which is not generally very fond of sports cars of this displacement) but also of having offered its letters of nobility to the 600 sports category. Powerful, playful, elegant, it offers ease of use and leading performance that has not been without whetting the appetite of the competition. And recently, the CBR has to fight against a certain Yamaha 600 FZR which is very formidable.

So, the manufacturer has revised somewhat the bowels of his sports. Our little Honda receives 8 additional cannons with its third birthday candle. A poisoned gift for the range of 750 because with 93 nags, this 600 is no longer very far from the famous bar (and limitation) of 100 horses. Technically, it is even achievable but it is more for marketing reasons that the power remains more modest than on models with larger cubic capacity. It makes sense that a bigger displacement is more rewarding – doesn’t it !?!
To obtain this increase in power, the intake has been retouched, the carburettors and camshafts are new, the compression ratio increased to 11.3 to 1 and the ignition adapted. In order to support this new load, the connecting rods have been reinforced. As for the chassis, no changes have been made. We would go so far as to say “so much the better”. The current one, always hidden like all the rest of the mechanical elements under a large and modest fairing, gives the CBR qualities unanimously appreciated and which make a good part of its fame..

Fun to drive, easy, always efficient, the machine remains a delight to take on small roads. The grip is immediate, the driving position a little sporty but also welcoming, the saddle pleasant and the controls remarkably smooth. The engine puts its two cents in it to facilitate the evolution of the bike. Very flexible, it acts with relaxation until mid-range. Apparently, the 8 hp gained are not there. We had to wait for the cavalry to “assess the distance” between 6,000 and 8,000 trs so that it then unleashed itself. The competition is more sensational but let’s not sulk our pleasure. The mill has a lot of fun and propels you the CBR beyond 200 km / h with impressive speed. Lying down and stashed behind the bubble (which lacks protection), we reach 225 km / h. And after that, we are astonished that the 750 bridles pull the face !?!

You will remember that the appearance of the CBR 600 was also the arrival of a new benchmark in terms of efficiency for motorcycles of this rank … This is still relevant although since then, the appearance of the FZR has set some clocks in advance. The Honda remains rigorous and balanced, agile and almost intuitive, but demands more and more authority as the pace increases. Its flexible suspensions, which benefit from excellent cushioning, dispense you from a physiotherapy session – good point – but also a top time on the circuit. On the track and in the very rhythmic rows of the hinterland, the CBR pays for its versatility and comfort by slightly declining performance in the face of more nervous machines on the part-cycle level;

but also more tiring and more typical. On the road, the CBR remains an excellent compromise between sport and sport comfort. Ah, do me a favor: turn the original tires which not only make driving tricky in the rain but also prevent you from taking advantage of the brake. It would be a shame, because this one is of a precision and a first plan feeling. It runs out of steam when heating but only in very sustained use.

8 horses and a new decoration – that’s it and that’s enough for a “evolution” CBR 600 which intends to remain a benchmark in its category. Okay, in pure efficiency, we find better; in comfort, we find better; practical question and duo, we find better … But finding a bike that does all of this just as well is already much harder. And the Honda 600 CBR gives you a level of versatility and ability that the competition will struggle to achieve..
