If we put aside the radars, potholes, traces of diesel and forgetfulness of priority, the motorcycle, and more particularly the sport, knows only one enemy: the weight. It is from this observation that Tadao Baba (former director of the Honda R&D testing department) developed the CBR 900 RR project.. His idea: to design the lightest machine possible.
In order to offer a motorcycle with remarkable performance, the work focused on several axes. We may be surprised at the choice of displacement – why a 900 when the competition offers FZR 1000 or GSX-R 1100? Because the important thing is not to provide a furious horde of horses. The CBR 900 came to the extreme of an ideal compromise thanks to its hunt for superfluous weight and the realization of a light and compact engine. You want compelling numbers ? Hold on tight: 124 hp for just 185 kg. Record weight for a large-displacement sports car. You start to imagine the painting ?
The development of the Fireblade was not done on the fly and mobilized a lot of brainpower. 4 years of thought and extensive IT assistance have made it possible to optimize recent technical solutions to make a powerful, reliable and slim motorcycle without resorting to difficult (and expensive) innovations. The engine is the most modern, a water-cooled 16-valve ACT twin 4-cylinder that weighs just 68 kg. Barely 6 more than the CBR 600 without using crazy techniques reserved for competition. Each component of the CBR has been designed with the same concern. The frame barely exceeds 10 kg. However, it is a classic aluminum perimeter frame. But as you are told, the hunt for extra pounds was ruthless. So that when you discover it, the 900 RR seems very small for a big bike..
Its dimensions are almost similar to those of the 600. However, there is no question of confusing them: its design is nastier, its shapes more generous, more rewarding, more “big cubes” while preserving this compact aspect. Not the same treatment for the tank, really impressive. The other good surprise of this machine is the fate reserved for the pilot. The driving position has not sank into radicalism. Although the seat is quite high, we have more the impression of being on a good sport-GT type VFR than on a typical tracker such as a Kawasaki 750 ZXR. Pleasant to drive from the first turns of the wheel, the motorcycle has an obvious quality: that of immediately putting its rider at ease. The incredibly supple engine contributes a lot to driving pleasure. The gearbox is also a model of smoothness coupled with great precision (Editor’s note: some Fireblade models have had a less flattering operating clearance).
The hallmark of Honda’s is that they give themselves immediately to whoever drives them. No user manual needed, the bike is immediately usable. This character trait is also found on this 900, something rare enough to be underlined because the majority of sportswomen are more fierce..
Once launched, this lightweight motorcycle literally sticks out by its handling. For a sportswoman in this category, agility is simply incredible. The piloting is very easy and natural, even when the pace rises. The steering, easy to place, is impressively precise. We register the CBR exactly where we want, the front end takes care of the rest. Perhaps sometimes a little too light on high accelerations – watch out for the profile of the road – leaving a significant margin of maneuver, the bike offers you the possibility of correcting your trajectory, even on the angle, without requiring great effort. . This sportswoman enjoys exemplary behavior. Its weight / power / ease / lightness / efficiency ratio is close to perfection. Sometimes we even wonder if it has not reached it. These excellent Bridgestone tires, including a 180 moss at the rear, serve it best in its evolutions..
We shouldn’t say it, but it’s really annoying to have to settle for the 100 hp version in France. We have already seen that the mill was very flexible. We realize in use that it goes very well with the chassis. Lively, it does not drag on climbing the towers to finally go into ecstasies at high speed. OK, he doesn’t have the potato of a Kawasaki 1100 or a 1000 FZR but the bike he takes is much lighter than these, so flattering acceleration that has nothing to envy the others. . In an arsouille, if you arrive at the same speed in a twisty section, you will score decisive points with the Honda. Reduced weight therefore later braking, more efficient placement in the curve and better passage speed. Rub against any other sportswoman – If the others hold you to the 400 m AD, you will exit the turn 3 seconds in advance.
Cheaper but as efficient and agile as a YZF 750 R, more than a GSX-R 1100, less radical and far more versatile and welcoming than a ZXR 750, the Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade has the luxury of being the lightest of sportswomen, an advantage of which it uses and abuses qualities. The competition is out of date and we do not really see who could come and shake it up.
