Road, sporty, or custom hyper design? Motorcycle or scooter? Prototype or anti-stereotype? The Honda DN-01 is a bit of all of this at the same time. This show-bike from the winged manufacturer attracted by the curiosity of its lines and the originality of its transmission when it wandered around international exhibitions.. But did we dare to imagine that the wise and serious Japanese brand would produce it one day? It’s done: the DN-01 goes from proto to series. But what is this strange machine with its lines so offbeat, so visionary, so disturbing that one wonders why Honda did not release it sooner?…
Well, OK, when you discover DN-01, you don’t really know what to think about it. Massive, elongated, futuristic style, aggressive fork crown, shark profile and cruiser tendency, the DN-01 combines genres. A daring exercise that fits perfectly with the spirit of a showroom machine. The predator optical unit and the single-sided swingarm galvanize the visual emotion. But taking this concept to the road is another story; and above all, had to dare. So, in which category to classify it? Hers. Because not content to shake up acquired values, Honda claims its intention to create a new category, a mixture of performance, comfort, ease and style. The word “performance” should be put into perspective – with 61 hp developed by the v-twin (from the Deauville and new Transalp), the DN-01 will not tickle the K 1200 GT and other FJRs.
In any case, there is no point in rushing like crazy on your handlebars. The minimalist protection of the bubble will encourage more cruising than long breakaways at sustained speed.
Beneath its allure of a bio-new-age-spatio-temporal-overstyle cruiser, the DN-01 is distinguished by its transmission. Its name is HFT, which stands for “Human-Friendly Transmission”. Be careful not to confuse with the vario installed on scooters or even with semi-automatic gearboxes allowing manual gear selection with a conventional gearbox, less clutch lever. Completely innovative, the HFT is a hydromechanical transmission equipped with a hydraulic clutch which automatically and gradually changes the gear ratios and not the transmission ratios. How it works ? A control placed on the right comodo allows you to choose between automatic (AT) and manual (MT) transmission modes. AT mode offers two fully automatic continuously variable options: D (Drive) and S (Sport). Finally, the MT mode leaves the possibility of a manual selection between 6 gears thanks to a control on the handlebars. Basically, a mixture of super-vario associated with a robotic box. The housings have been completely redesigned and specially designed to house this new transmission system. The HFT transmission also has a mechanical “neutral” mode that is easily accessible at the push of a button..
In terms of driving comfort, in addition to the general flexibility induced by the HFT transmission, the DN-01 wants to prove its availability in this area: recessed handlebars, wide running boards, very low saddle (690 mm), long and spacious seat, good grab handles , relaxed driving position (custom limit), fully digital instrument panel including a gear indicator engaged – The large panel with backlit white LEDs also offers a clear view of all the instruments, in particular the speedometer and the tachometer digital, double odometer, on-board watch or fuel gauge; life on board had to be most enjoyable. In dynamics and part-cycle, the double steel cradle chassis, the single-sided cardan shaft and the 41 mm fork should fulfill their task without worry, Safety is reinforced by an ABS coupled with combined braking.
On the other hand, level of handling and ease, we raise some doubts. The beast still weighs 270 kilos, and the pneumatic mounting is more flashy than really adapted. 130 at the front, while a 120 would be more suitable, and a 190 at the rear – what interest to put a dimension of hypersportive for a machine of 60 horses ?
Appeared in concept-bike in 2005, the DN-01 arrives with its innovations on the road this year. Craziness of the most serious of motorcycle manufacturers or lifting the veil on a future range? Honda seems more than confident of its new concept: “the new DN-01 is the very first of a new generation of machines which will very soon open up to as many people as possible new perspectives in terms of the practice of motorcycling and the pleasures of riding. conduct.”
* To further add to the capabilities of the DN-01, the Honda Accessories department offers a whole range of specific equipment including a GPS navigation system, a backrest, a U-lock, an alarm system, heated grips or another outer protective cover.
