The Honda 750 NR is no longer a motorcycle … it’s a technological achievement! a concentrate of know-how, the ultimate Honda motorcycle. The Japanese manufacturer designed it with the other aim of driving but its real place would rather be in a glass pyramid capable of defying time.. Let us ignore certain materialistic considerations such as the totally delusional price (375,000 balls and in 1992), the frightening rate of manufacture (3 copies per day) or the number of models manufactured (about 800 would have left the factory). 34 models arrived in France. The manufacturer had the good taste to offer each buyer (fortunate) a Honda key ring in solid silver. The NR brings together the pinnacle of research – fully adjustable inverted fork, single-sided rear, dashboard with every imaginable control dial and digital tachometer, magnesium rims and stainless steel exhausts under the saddle. The bubble, to protect the pilot of ultraviolet rays, receives a titanium surface treatment similar to that of the American F 15. The full carbon fiber fairing isn’t just super-light; very successful aerodynamically, canceling the harmful effects of air flow, it allows the NR to glide through the air like a shark in water. But what has caused much ink to flow is its extraordinary oval piston engine. This is not a joke ! Each cylinder contains an oval piston which transmits its force to 2 forged titanium connecting rods. To supply the combustion chamber, no less than 8 valves and 2 spark plugs.
Take the count: here you have a V4 with 8 spark plugs and 32 valves. Distribution by cascade of gears and PGM-FI injection complete this monument which remains without descendants and placed forever on a pedestal. At the time, Eric Maurice, tester at Moto-Journal, had the honor of trying it out and appreciating its fantastic flexibility. Its only disappointment was: “A very unspectacular engine and a more road-sporty VFR style, than pure sporty RC 30 style”. In addition to its high-tech appeal (200 patents filed), the NR will offer 4 world speed records (obtained with a prepared version, lightened to 180 kg and optimized to 155 hp):
– Flying start kilometer: 299.825 km / h
– Mile start launched: 299,788Km / h
– Mile standing start: 221.219Km / h
– 10 Kilometers standing start: 283,851Km / h.
Some elements of the NR have found heirs such as the retros-indicators on the CBR 1100 XX. But this motorcycle remains a dream, a prestigious machine, the result of 15 years of research and engineers’ passions..
