What is actually cold?
The motorcycle is waiting in the garage ready to start, but motorcycle weather is not in sight – welcome to the cold season. Only one thing helps: just drive off. Winter or no winter.

Shit, was that a mistake? Just getting dressed would be a case for a new comic by Holger Aue. Has the black, heavy Rukka station wagon really got that stiff – or is it me? Whatever the case, it never seemed more difficult to get on, never was it tighter, never had it more zips to close, and never were they so difficult to reach. Just the long way down to the Velcro fasteners on the boots is a torture with protection. Was that really a good idea with the exit??

One thing is already clear: I have seldom cursed harder than when I discovered that I had forgotten the thermal lining…
The weather, the age, the progress
The thermometer shows five degrees down here, in the Stuttgart boiler. I know from experience that this will change, at the latest up in the Filder region. Two degrees less are always in there. Fortunately, I remembered about the food, otherwise I would have frozen one off. So go ahead now. Out of the clothes, in the lining, back in the clothes. With fat thermal underwear in two layers, of course. Now I’m sweating, the soup is running down my boots and woolen socks. Dressed too warmly? No, that will pass. The BMW is already waiting in the underground car park.
It’s amazing how personal preferences keep adapting and changing. If someone had predicted years ago that I would prefer the BMW R 1200 R to a Yamaha R1, I would have laughed at him. But the “R” back then had nothing to do with what Bayern are offering today. This motor can now do everything from strolling to sport, the ESA chassis has a range from cuddly soft to sporty and firm, the electronics work perfectly from ABS to traction control. All of this goes through my head subliminally. And all of that counts in this weather. In addition, the Metzeler Roadtec Z8 will not react quite as stubbornly to the expected asphalt temperatures as the athletes on the R1. That, too, makes me feel good about BMW. But above all, it is natural – the heated grips!
Right at level two, that really buzzes. While I’m still on the fat arterial road, I’m already going back, level one is enough in thick winter gloves. The tires have to warm up first, they still lock, and they don’t want to go into the curve. A few courageous braking maneuvers – thanks to ABS without any risk if you look in the rearview mirror beforehand – are fun and help. I can literally feel how the skin is kneaded softly, how it comes to terms with the cold road surface, how the weather picks up on the ideal line. Stuttgart is behind BMW and me, Tubingen ahead. Temperature? Now even 6.5 degrees, two gears down, and off you go.
With dynamism, but not breakneck
It’s finally here, the moment for which it was worth it on its own: the boxer crashes on the autobahn, simply pushes you into the parallel universe in the left lane. Cars fly past to the right, hardship and cold are forgotten. Cold winter air presses into my lungs, vitalized, euphoric. The boxer loosely pushes over the 200 mark, and there it is, the next descent. And the first real corner.
How is that going to work I ask myself and brake gently down to the turning speed. But this little intermediate sprint helped. BMW and I – we are much more one now, we want more. So into the corner, not breakneck, but at least with a portion of dynamism that I thought was impossible ten minutes ago. And indeed, it works. It’s actually going quite well. Felt 45 degrees incline, in fact it is probably 20 degrees less.
Rush hour traffic has a break
But it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. I don’t feel any pressure. I roll relaxed through the Neckar Valley, mostly alone, even the rush hour traffic has a break at this time. In places the streets are still damp, but that doesn’t matter here and now either. I know the corners, I know the track, I know how it is here in summer. It’s different now.
Because of the cold too, of course. But that too is different than expected. She doesn’t shake me, doesn’t come as a surprise, but slowly takes me with her on our winter trip. I settle in this icy but clear air, accept it as a constant companion, just as one arranges on a vacation tour with 50 kilos of additional luggage. They restrict handling and freedom of movement – and you still have fun, so you would never miss out on the trip. I switch from the Neckar valley to the plain, let myself drift through the forest and meadows, stop for a coffee and a piece of cherry cake, even catch a few rays of sunshine.
