Alex Marquez virtually wins first MotoGP race
Moto2 world champion Alex Marquez won his first MotoGP race on Sunday in Mugello (Italy) … except that it was on a video game console against ten other real riders in the premier class ! Explanations.
This is a first in the history of motorcycle Grand Prix: ten riders in the premier class competed live in a competition organized by MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports on the video game "MotoGP19". This new format was decided following the multiple postponements of "real" races because of the coronavirus, hence its name on social networks: #StayAtHomeGP (Grand Prix Stay at home).

This virtual Grand Prix brought together brothers Alex and Marc Marquez (Honda Repsol), Maverick Vinales (Yamaha Monster), Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Gresini), Alex Rins, Joan Mir (Suzuki Ecstar), Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha Petronas), Iker Lecuona and Miguel Oliveira (KTM Tech 3) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Pramac), each obviously at the "controls" of their respective real motorcycle.
Fabio Quartararo, as fast in electronic version as in real life, took pole position on the Mugello circuit with a quarter of a second ahead of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati). But things got complicated in the race: off with a bang, El Diablo shot straight at the first corner taking with him his future teammate Maverick Viñales !
Meanwhile, debutant Alex Marquez battled "pixel against pixel" with Pecco Bagnaia for the first place under the eyes of the reigning world champion, Marc Marquez. The latter – comfortably installed on his sofa like his nine "e-rivals" – takes advantage of this strange situation to rest his operated shoulder more this winter..

Then Alex Marquez managed to forge a good lead over the Ducati-Pramac rider, while his big brother was caught and then overtaken by Viñales. A great end to the race for the Yamaha official who also spent a night in hospital observation in mid-March following a fall during "real" motocross training..
Never worried after his breakaway, Alex Marquez won this first virtual event with a 7.023 sec lead (!) Over Francesco Bagnaia. Follow Maverick Viñales and Fabio Quartararo, back from the devil-vauvert to snatch fourth position from Marc Marquez on the penultimate lap.

"I am very happy", comments Alex Marquez, much more convincing on console than on the "real" RC213V from HRC! "Since I knew I wasn’t necessarily the fastest on a lap, I made it my goal to be as consistent as possible".
The next virtual race is scheduled for April 12, while the date of the first real race has still not been defined: for lack of anything better, let’s stay connected to observe the aces of the controller. !
