Jonak-Harley-Davidson Fat Bob
About 2 liters

Flasks the size of a beer mug that toast up to 5500 times per minute – can that last in the long run? In the US, at least, people are optimistic.

The American engine manufacturer JIMS advertises its huge V2 with the words: “The 131 cubic inch racing engine reaches a new level of performance and service life”. This statement needs to be put into perspective, because JIMS relates it to racing engines. The US forge specializes in V-Twins with a 45-degree Harley angle and develops power packs for drag racing. Since the mounting points are identical to those of the air-cooled Harleys, the tuning motors fit into the production models. For performance-hungry Harley fans for whom the normal is too normal, Fritz Jonak is now offering the 2231 cm³ (131 cubic inch) Vau with approval. Jonak is so convinced of this giant engine that he offers an optional lifelong guarantee for a fee of 2000 euros.

However, there is a small catch: This guarantee is linked to the first owner, it is not transferred in the event of a resale. It is also limited to 100,000 kilometers. But that should be enough for most bikers due to their annual mileage.

The first impression of how such a capacity monster rages was provided by a Fat Bob with the fat Jim at MOTORRAD. At the push of a button, the bolide starts rolling. Bollern is the correct term here. The monster trumpets through silencers from the specialist Kess-Tech. Two throttle valves at the end of the silencer are opened under computer control and vary not only the dynamic pressure, but also the volume. This is done by taking into account the speed, gear and throttle valve position of the injection system. At the push of a button, you can conjure up a whisper from the Bollern and sneak almost inaudibly through nocturnal residential areas.

But sneaking, no, you wouldn’t really expect this engine to do that. Although the 131-cubic-inch V2, in contrast to tuned copies, feels comfortable even at the lowest revs. Enter the corridor, and the box chugs you around the globe in idle. No problem. But if you want it to rock, all you need is a courageous twist on the throttle. What happens next belongs in the realm of fables for those who are only used to the standard 88, 96, 103 Vaus or even the 110 cubic inch Screamin ‘Eagle engine: The tuned Fat Bob marches like a rocket and shoots from standing to 100 km / h in just 3.8 seconds. But it’s not the pure acceleration that is fun, but rather the elasticity of the fat twin. He shakes overtaking maneuvers out of his much-cited sleeve. A small turn at 2000 rpm is enough and the Fat Bob lives and defends the left lane – at least up to 220 km / h. The coordination of the power package went very well. The engine does not choke itself when the gas bursts spontaneously, but obediently obeys the commands of the right hand. Tuning legend and Harley specialist Gunther Sohn, who has won countless laurels in drag racing, is responsible for setting up the 131. The mapping he programmed optimally marries the V2 with the larger air filter and the Kess-Tech exhaust system. But the JIMs engine was convincing not only when driving, but also on the MOTORRAD test bench: 121 hp at 5300 rpm and 176 Nm at 4100 rpm are a word

Just like the built-in Ohlins shock absorbers, which respond very sensitively and give the Fat Bob, in conjunction with the built-in Ohlins fork springs, a fabulous grip with enormously increased comfort. But exclusivity has its price, as always: while the Ohlins chassis costs 2500 euros, Fritz Jonak charges around 15,000 euros for the complete installation of a 131 JIMS. The optional 2000 euros for a lifelong guarantee hardly matter.
