In the absence of large road at Kawasaki, it is the trail-GT which occupies the role of long-distance traveler. A case far from being an exception. You almost thought it was a fad until it almost became a norm. KTM, Triumph, Suzuki, Ducati (to name a few) charter this type of motorbike to set off for the long haul. The abundance of technology having also taken its quarters in Akashi, the Versys 1000 receives many improvements under a new face.
Gone are the days when the Versys had the face of a minion returning from a vacation in Chernobyl. Redesigned in 2015 with hints of H2, the trail goes further in this experiment by adding pieces of Ninja 400 and 636. With a more mature air, chubby shoulders and a loaded jaw to replace the mandibles, it seems that the time has come to assert a stature of deference. Kawa took the opportunity to review the shoe, add a few pieces of trim on the back to make it a little more opulent, change the shape of the indicators … and impose strange hatches on the sidewalls..
This is where the additional lanterns for curved lighting of the SE version are located. But rather than offering it specific panels, the manufacturer persists in the same challenge as for the H2 SX (only the H2 SX SE is available with us) by blocking the locations with covers which spoil the design. These spaces would be as big as a tangerine, we would ignore them – but here, the integration is as successful as a tape on porcelain.
Let’s not pay more attention to it. We will not see them while driving, and this new skin combined with a modified screen should improve the protection on board; although it is only adjustable to 65mm now, which is 10 less than before.
If Kawa wanted to give a new face to his touring trail, he seems more satisfied with its technical design. From the frame to the wheels and the engine, many elements are taken from the previous version. Not all, because some subjects like to be updated. The ride-by-wire control now allows you to take advantage of cruise control. The injection is retouched to offer a little more consistency in the usual regimes. It will be all on the engine side. The 1043 cc 4-cylinder from the Z 1000 still delivers 120 hp at 9000 rpm and 10.4 mkg of torque at 7500 rpm. It does not want to get involved in the fight of the mastocs of the sector, posting 30 to 40 hp more. The expiration benefits from a new profile for the manifold inter-tubes, a new 3-way catalyst and a revised silencer. Not so much less big but more acute. Quite velvety by releasing more than by exploding its power, the block will be insensitive to the 3 additional kilos of the bike.
Also little change on the chassis side, apart from a recalibrated suspension setting for better shock absorption. The inverted 43 mm fork and the single shock absorber working on 150 mm of travel should distill more comfort. Oops, let’s go back to the front a bit. This is where we see change. The brake calipers become radial and monobloc, and will be assisted by a more efficient ABS. We will see this in the next chapter. Because let’s take a moment in this cockpit before probing the electronic innards of the 1000 Versys III, a place where a large part of the evolutions nestle..
Voiiiilla! It feels like the handlebars. This allows us to see that the brake chamber is now sport type. A 12V socket is finally part of the standard equipment. The instrumentation comes directly from the H2, offering a more illustrious side. Commodos have changed, are much more furnished, and herald new assistance.
The cruise control, as specified a little before, and with the presence of a Bosch I.M.U, the big Versys can afford the KCMF cornering monitoring system. He oversees the KIBS, the intelligent anti-lock braking system inherited from the H2 and ZX-10R.
We find the traction control with 3 KTRC modes, ABS, the two power modes, and a shifter is available as an option. LED lighting everywhere.
Permanent surveillance can save you a lot of surprises. We would almost forget the little things that make your daily life easier. This is nothing new but it is always very appreciable this rack to carry a big thing that you never know where to put. Still no gimbal; the presence of a central stand is therefore very judicious for chain lubrication. No small tabs for the bungee cords but an anchoring system for the bags, discreet and efficient.
The Versys 1000, does it want a bit of the road or is it always road-type? With 17-inch wheels and Bridgestone T31 rubber gummers, there’s no doubt about its orientation. If Kawa had wanted to mislead, we would find the A41 and a 19-inch front wheel. No, the machine fully assumes its vocation as a crossover. For his third chapter, he recovered a whole bunch of technologies released by the most tactical models of the catalog. But the standard version is only entitled to a few, just to maintain an attack price while preserving the essential. As with the H2 SX, the new Versys 1000 only reveals the extent of its virtues in the SE version. With semi-active suspensions, reinforced electronics, standard shifter, curved lighting, increased comfort, and European price.
