Remember 4 years ago, roughly the same period: Kawasaki presented the Z 1000. A shock for everyone, a beast on 2 wheels, a design that heated, a chassis that charmed, an engine that saved … . and the beginning of another era for Kawa, that of renewal.
And now that street fighters are invading the streets and overshadowing the famous Z, the manufacturer is bringing out the slapping box with this new generation of Z 1000. No doubt, it will hit hard.
At the sight of these images, we can only congratulate the mutation of this big street-fighter. It’s more lively, sharper, more worked, more violent even, with attributes of the most beautiful effect.
AH …! The pots. They shock you, don’t they!?! The 4 flutes have disappeared to make room for 2 huge bowls themselves terminated by 2 nozzles – but take the count: you still have 4 gas evacuation outlets. Above all, with these new exhaust volumes, the engine will breathe much better than before. We will come back to this in a few lines.
Let’s not be too impatient and taste these tense and bleeding new lines. More tapered, the fork crown has gained in style, in threats. The inverted fork is still there but now equipped with a magnificent set of radially mounted brake calipers, and petal discs as on the ZX-R 10 and 636.
Look at the front fender! An incisor has grown in front of the fork tubes to allow it to bite the road (or the competitors?). The radiator scoops evolved into broad shoulders with a distinct resemblance to those of the ER-6n. Under the tank, the engine inherits new casings very nicely designed. The little tuning touch (colored plastic covers) which ended the alternator and clutch housings turned into superb cut parts (provided that it is not plastoc …). From one end to the other of the rims (always half-painted, half-polished), it is as bad as it gets. And yet, a little softness escapes from the rear, with a posterior modeled on that of the ZX-10R. Mirrors, screen, indicators, side covers; all the casing is ironed in the design office. The rear sting is gone, but that doesn’t mean the Z 1000’s fieriness has calmed down.
Quite the contrary. Kawasaki claims torque has been increased at low and mid-range. Great satisfaction because the old Z was not very demonstrative on this side. It must be said that the exhaust flutes took a lot of breath. Little is known about the block of the new Z 1000. But when we know that new side pillars have been grafted onto the frame and that the swingarm strongly resembles that of the ZZR 1400, we expected some muscle.
And what a surprise! far from giving in to the increased power delivered by the competition (FZ1: 150 horsepower; K 1200 R: 163), the Z is not afraid to admit that it delivers 2 horsepower … less than before. With 125 guns to master, the moth of the greens is right between the Yam FZ1 and the Honda CBF 1000. Could this be a way of reconciling a ladle of power with a large handful of availability? If Miss Z offers us more torque while retaining the performance of its chassis, we re-ask without problem. The gniak will also have to be available earlier, because Z 1000 version 07 has 7 kg more body mass (muscle?).
More intimidating, more aggressive, more classy, the new Z also knows how to be more obvious with the pilot. The ergonomics have been revised while maintaining a position oriented for sport driving. Note that improvements are reported at the saddle, footrests and tank … and on the cockpit side. The strange counter from the 2nd generation ZX-636R has given way to a hand tachometer and digital block assembly. Like what, it’s still the best.
