Performance increase to 180 PS through turbocharger

Content of

For Richard Fluttert, the 120 hp of his Kawasaki Z 1300 were not enough. So the Dutch technology freak put pressure on the six-pack with a turbocharger. Now around 180 HP heat up people and machines enormously.

For Richard Fluttert it was love at first sight. “When I saw a Kawasaki Z 1300 for the first time in 1979, I knew that I would buy one of these machines as soon as I had the money for it,” explains the Dutchman. That went faster than expected, because the now 51-year-old driving school owner actually had enough Dutch guilders for his first one in 1982 Z 1300 saved together. Although the -Kawasaki in series trim with 120 hp was anything but underpowered, Fluttert wanted more. And built a turbocharger on his machine at the time. “I’ve always liked extremes,” he laughs. “And a turbo on the water-cooled six-cylinder is pretty spectacular.”

Performance increase to 180 PS through turbocharger

The turbo pushes at 0.5 bar. That brings about 45 to 50 percent more performance.

With this turbo kit, the carburetor is mounted directly on the charger housing (“draw-through system” from Mr. Turbo). The rotating loader blades press the gasoline-air mixture into the combustion chambers with a pressure of up to 0.5 bar. This allows the Kawasaki to be driven sensibly even at low speeds. However, it took Fluttert a long time to find this vote. “With the carburetor, such a turbo conversion is pretty complicated. Even though I had received all the necessary data from Mr. Turbo in America. But these didn’t work on my machine. So I had to experiment myself. ”The built-in American Rajay B40 is one of the smaller turbochargers, but was best suited for the conversion. Because it can be rotated 360 degrees for attachment and responds early, which is good for drivability on low tours.

At least in theory. In practice, however, the first test drives were sobering. The Kawa ran perfectly under full load, but stuttered in the partial load range due to insufficient fuel pressure. “I then tried a few things, increased the float level and fuel pressure, and finally installed two pressure regulators that limit the fuel pressure to 0.5 bar. At higher pressures, there is a risk of the float chamber overflowing and thus the risk of fire. “

The turbo pushes at 0.5 bar. That brings about 45 to 50 percent more performance. “Perhaps a boost pressure of 0.7 bar would also be feasible, which would generate around 210 hp. But I don’t want any problems. That’s why I installed a water injection as a precaution. From 0.3 bar, a cooling water mist lowers the temperature in the combustion chambers. The 180 hp that are possible with it are enough for me. “

The conversion also includes an additional oil pump that returns oil from the turbo to the engine, forged pistons from JE Pistons and a stronger head gasket, which reduces compression. The turbo enthusiast built the exhaust system with the spectacular tailpipe himself from original and accessory parts. Finally, the ignition was adjusted. “I had to make a compromise. The six-cylinder responds well in the lower area, but weakens a little at 4000 tours, and then turns all the more powerfully to the red area at 8000 tours. “

“I just want to feel what 300 hp feels like.”

van de Kuilen

The conversion of the technology-loving Dutchman shows many interesting details, for example the fuel pressure regulator.

The top speed is Fluttert, who lives only 15 kilometers from the German border and the unlimited motorways, but it doesn’t matter: “The Kawa gives me a different kick than Topspeed ever could.”

He has given his 297-kilo colossus tighter fork springs at the front, while Ohlins struts at the rear keep the load halfway under control. “The machine drives relatively well. The Kawa is not built for extreme inclines anyway. And sometimes I even really enjoy the wobble. “In any case, more than a Honda CBX, adds Fluttert:” Before the Z 1300, I briefly owned a CBX 1000. Its unstable chassis and rattling engine annoyed me tremendously. After a month I sold the Honda again. “

Richard Fluttert’s dream of the Z 1300 has come true. He will never give up the two turbo bikes again. But he’s dreaming again. From a Kawa-saki ZZR 1400 Turbo. “I just want to feel what 300 hp feels like.”
