As popular as it is, the 21st century Z family has always had only two members: a big, fat roadster for the mercenaries, and a mid-size for the heart of the market. Success has always been there, but did we think of those who wanted the bottle without the drunkenness? ?
With the Z 300, this is now possible. Playing with a strong identity due to its facies modeled on the Z 800, the smallest of the Zs is really noticed. Style question, it’s hard! With the KTM 390 Duke, here is one of the most attractive small roadsters in the class.
Would you believe it if we admitted to you that it was a Ninja 300 R that served as the basis?!? She seems to take nothing from her athletic cousin as the silhouettes are so different. And yet, the Z 300 is equipped with the same technical equipment. Tubular steel frame, 37mm fork, wheels, engine and exhaust are identical. Like what, a good designer and a new handlebar can completely change the philosophy of a bike..
The Z 300 offers the services of the parallel twin of the Ninja, without modifications. With its 296 cm3, its double butterfly injection, its 8 valves and double ACT, the boiler spits out 39 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, and 2.8 mkg a little lower. This is what allows you to have fun nicely, without however shaking your cortex. The Z 300 may have the mouth, it remains an entry-level motorcycle.
From the Ninja, the Z 300 also got the dashboard; with a few fun touches to stand out: the white background of the tachometer, the Z logo, and the orange lighting of the digital window. They also share braking, one petal disc per wheel. 290mm at the front, 220mm at the rear, and double piston caliper for everyone. ABS is optional, for 2 kilos and 400 euros more.
About kilos, the Z 300 sheds 4 units compared to the Ninja. Not enough to make it a featherweight: 168 kilos on the scale, it is not nothing. Designated contestant Miss Duke wears 20 fewer.
Being the smallest of the Zs can prove to be a serious asset in the urban environment. The same devastating face as the big brother 800, an acceptable power and perfect for young A2, and a price below the bar of 5 plates. For the more sporty, the limited slip clutch will calm the evasions of the rear wheel. For daily use, we will rent flexible suspensions, cut for comfort in town.
